Hi,

A year ago I purchased popular here Ti-Tri with 1.3L Evernew pot. I was pleased with its performance, usability, weight and overall a happy owner. However I never boiled more than 0.6L in it for solo hikes. Hence I'm thinking to switch to a more slim and lighter cookset.

I think this time I will go aluminum route, since I don't really put the pot on open fire and I see no use for pricy titanium. I'd love to use smaller cone (Trail Designs or Flat Cat Gear's one or alike), might be also aluminum. I want to use my Starlyte stove with the new cookset because it allows to ditch the stakes and is awesome overall. I would also like to try one of Ruta Locura's carbon fiber lids to save weight and just to try.

So I started to look on various pots and except the Evernew 0.6L (which is titanium) I couldn't find a good substitution. I dislike pot gripper and I love the convenience of holding the pot with one hand (handles).

Any input is appreciated.

Greg

Well I have the Evernew 600 short/wide pot with the tri-ti cone and a Starlite burner. Could not be happier. Fully expect this set up to last beyond my lifetime. Of course it was more than I wanted to spend. Oh well. happy now. I only cook for myself.

I'm pretty sure Trail Designs makes the Fission to fit the Optimus Solo cookset, which is aluminum. They might make another one of their systems to fit the Optimus Solo as well, but you would have to check.

Thank you guys for your answers.

Yeah, I'm sure the Evernew 0.6L bundle will be good, but I'm trying to save some money with this purchase. If I'll not find anything cheaper with ~same specs I'll grab it.

Regarding the Optimus Solo – is it this set: link?? If so – I have no use for fry pan, it's a dead weight for me.

And obviously I want this cookset weigh less than the one I have now (Evernew 1.3L ~130g + TiTri).

Three requirements you stated are-

1) Cheap
2)Alumnium
3)Compatable with a Starlite stove.

Using the Starlight stove with the intregal stand means using a Caldeta cone or a Flatcat windscreen is wasted weight and money for your needs. Both of those systems were designed to be both potstands and windscreens. You only need the windscreen .

If using bare aluminium does not bother you ,I would get a IMUSA 10CM cup with one of Zelph's lids.

Then ask Dan if he has any 4" "EZ-Fold " corregated tooling foil windscreens.
Then make a round HD foil " floor" to put under the whole shebang .

If you set the windscreen diameter up for no more than about a 1/4" gap around the cup,you will match the effiency of about any stove setup out there. All up cost for the cup lid and windscreen, about 20 bucks. Total weight- less than 4 ounces.

Been there ,done that. It works.

I have Trail Designs Sidewinder stove, 3 cup pot and Inferno gassier wood burning stove insert.

The 3 cup anodized aluminum pot & lid are perfect for solo cooking or just water boiling.
This size stove and pot work perfectly for ESBIT fuel tabs because the stove is small enough to concentrate ESBIT tab heat.

For winter I set a JB 1.3 Liter pot on top when melting snow with the wood burning setup.

NOTE: But, yeah, I use pot grippers. I like 'em for pots and skillets. (My two skillets have no handles.)

Plus one on the imusa. The 10cm is a great little pot, and cheap. Need a little more capacity? Grab yourself a 12cm imusa pot. They are cheap, and very versatile.

Yes, I have all the components. 10cm Imusa pots w/lids, Starlyte Stoves, E-Z Fold windscreens

Send me a PM.

Jimmer, I have a TD Ti-Tri and use it with modified Starlyte (without pot stand), so it would not be waste of weight. Moreover I like the extra stability of a cone vs more tippy stand of a stove. This is true not only for Starlyte stove which is best stove I ever used, but for any stove with small diameter. And the cone is somewhat more rigit and also multiuse :p

Thanks for that Imusa tip. I cannot find however what is its weight. Also is that handle could cause issues while packing? Any experience on this?

Eric, yeah I know you are a pure anti-titanium guy :). What is the exact pot you are using? How much it weigh?

Dale, that Olicamp mug is just great! 90gram and 0.6L is what I need. Is there any option for lid? Can Dan's lid fit on it?

I was looking onto completely different camp now – the Keg-F system of Trail Designs. I believe DAn has similar setup with his Foster can. What I'm curious about is whether I need to carry the protective caddy in both opts.

if you want the handleless design that batchstoves sells his site says
Made from Lightweight Aluminum
A handle-free design,
10cm Dia. X 10 cm Tall
Anodized finish
Smooth folded rim
24 oz. Capacity
Total weight less than 90 grams including lid

Gregory,

The IMUSA mug handles are no big deal in packing. The mug is small and the handle only projects out less than an inch with no sharp corners. Sure as heck less of a packing issue tban a standard Caldera Cone in terms of bulk, and THAT is a fact…;)

I guess the only problem with the IMUSA from your standpoint is

A) Trail Designs does not make cones for IMUSA mugs because the mugs dont have enough rim on them to engage the cone.

B) Rutalocura does not make Carbon fiber lids for them either.. o

The one mug that ticks off all the boxes is the OLICAMP alumnium space saver mug-
Hard Annodized black or silver annodized- your choice.
Folding handles.
TD makes a cone for it.
Rutta locura makes a lid for it.

2 cup Aluminum Foster Ridgeline pot with lid and StarLyte stove total = 40 grams

10cm Imusa pot with zelph lid 89 grams

Modified StarLyte stove 15 grams

jimmer ultralight questioned the weight of my Imusa 10cm and zelph lid so I had to post the weight of the lid only.

The StarLyteXL-FS is a new member to the StarLyte family of stoves

The “burner” portion weighs 1 ounce, is 1 inch tall and is 3-3/8 inches in diameter.

The “pot support” is made of 306 stainless steel, weighs 0.1 ounce and is 1″ tall, same as the burner and will wrap around the burner for compact storage.

The burner holds 4 ounces of fuel in suspension, which means the fuel won’t spill out once it’s filled. A superior safety feature for every day use and especially in states where “burn bans” are common.

1 plastic lid is supplied to seal the burner to save unused fuel. Lid is made of HDPE plastic. Lid weighs 0.1 ounce.

So after this research I want to nail down my choices:

0) FOR REFERENCE! Evernew 0.6L TITANIUM (!!) pot (93 gram, $40) + Ti-Tri windscreen (30 gram, $80) to fit everything into the pot (forgot this another requirement). It doesn't make sence to switch orginal lid at probably 20gr for the CF Rutalocura's one at 7gr. So this combo is at 123g/$120

1) The Olicamp Space Saver mug at (90g/$15) + CF Rutalocura lid (7g/$15) + Caldera Cone Sidewinder (30g/$25?) so in total 127g/$55?

2) The Imusa pot with Dan's lid weigh 89g only! Now I'm not sure regarding the prices, looks like some $15 for the mug + lid. However I need a windscreen, the EZ Fold should fit. It's weight? Some 10 grams? So looks like this setup will be at $20 total and under 100 grams. However without the stability of a cone. The weight without the alcy stove!

3) SUL kit like the Keg-F which I dislike because of the protective caddy (not sure how much weight does it save in comparison to two first variants). 150g (with the caddy), $60

4) The SUL cookset from Dan which weigh 40 in total with Foster can. Again same issue with demaging while on trip. Also, mind the fact that I get the whole pack into a plane. God knows how they handle it. Surely not babying…

Is the protective caddy in keg-F is absolutely needed item? Without it the pot can will most likely be damaged? What about Foster can pot? Any experience on that?

I think that stability of a cone is something I really need. This leaves 0, 1 and 3. Out of this 1 looks like pretty good weight/price ratio…

Thoughts??

I'm liking the Snow Peak 900 pot (Ti), with handles and a tiny fry pan lid with a handle. Used with the Trail Designs Sidewinder. Rand at TD said they didn't make the sidewinder for the SP900, but he made one special for me. It fits in the pot, and I love it for solo cooking.
