Decent cheese, homemade soup, hot chocolate and proper Cadburys Chocolate (not made by Hershey)

cadb

490 calories in the American size bar. When the cold, elevation, and effort has taken my apetite I can always eat these morning, noon , and night. Especially long winter night keep-me-warm snack at 1 am when dinner was at 6:30. Chewable even at -5F (snickers are not at that temp) Walkers shortbread is a close second with a swig of hot chocolate with each biscuit.

Hi Dan

Shudder!

Unusually understated for Roger:-) SPAM was developed not so far from my home (a 5-6 day walk). We even have a SPAM Museum!

My own position is that SPAM is Minnesota's contribution to the world's stock of weapons of mass destruction.

On the other hand, when traveling to Estonia for our son's wedding we were looking for uniquely Minnesotan items to bring as gifts to the new extensions to our family … a very difficult search (due to globalization). Cardiac Pacemakers were too expensive and maybe not appropriate so SPAM was one obvious choice … much to the horror of our son, the giggles of his betrothed and the puzzlement of her parents (why would someone put unwanted emails in a can?).

BTW, Hormel adheres to the story that the name SPAM is derived from SPiced hAM … but others claim it is an acronym for Special Parts And Meat. I'll leave the Special Parts to the reader's imagination.

I thought it stood for "scientifically processed animal matter."

Kinda like "mechanically separated chicken."

Sea Bear makes some pretty amazing chowders. I've carried the Smoked Salmon Spicy White Bean Soup on winter backpacking trips. Heavy, sure, who cares. It's a wonderfully satisfying treat on a cold winter night after my shelter is set up and it's dinner time. They also make a killer Smoked Salmon Chowder, but that requires added milk so I've never carried that on a trip. Eaten plenty on cold winter nights at home though.

My winter sleep schedule tends to go as follows:

1) fall asleep after dinner around 7 or 8 (depending on the group size)
2) wake up between midnight and 2am. Put a Snickers in my sleeping bag, read while it warms up, eat it, then read some more. Awake for 2-3 hours?
3) Wake up with the sun

Midnight Snickers are the best.

>SPAM… OK BUT only if it's fried and eaten along with omelette or pancakes

> cheese – ALWAYS

> Cadbury bar – I prefer Trader Joe's 1 lb. semi-sweet bar with almonds. SOOO good! But hey, I can gag down a Cadbury's in a nanosecond. ;o)

> lots of margarine or butter in main courses

> fresh (frozen) meat on 1st two days (hamburger and/or sausage??)

> bacon, pre cooked to save fuel

> OVEN to make jelly filled biscuits and sweetbreads (pot lid has aneroid thermometer)

> freezer bag meals with substance

>"soft" style filled cookies (raisin or date filling) Love 'em for a snack or dessert.
