Parks Canada is placing several bright red, plastic chairs in scenic locations throughout Canada’s national parks, including the flagship Banff, to help draw people to viewpoints and connect with nature.

Conservationists say the recycled plastic Adirondack chairs found in areas ranging from alpine meadows to waterside havens and the tops of mountains are an ugly intrusion on the natural landscape that do absolutely nothing to connect people with nature.<.i>

To Parks Canada in reference to "nature" and quoting a very famous fictional Spaniard:

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Right. So seeking out chairs instead of their intended views. OK. That'll work. Lazy tourist like to sit down. When do the shuttles to these chairs start running? You don't expect me to walk all that way do you?

They must be paying too much attention to US National Circus Parks.

And $225 recycled plastic chairs. Does that include delivery and installation? Doubt it.

I've been to a few places with mountain-top access for vehicles, such as Clingmans Dome,TN, Mt. Elbert, CO and recently Spruce Knob, WV and it is interesting how there's always somebody huffing and puffing and beetching about the short walk to the observation tower. And some of them have benches to take a rest break on the short walk!

Yes, hard to believe governments are wasting money on idiotic stunts like this in a time of such austerity.

^^ yep, Mt washington and Cannon mt in NH too. If you want a picture with the summit sign on Washington you have to stand in line behind 20 people who drove their car or took the cog railway up. I've done it once now and will not again. The large tourist restaurant, gift shop etc is pretty ugly too. The cars and railway $$ does go to fund the observation center there but I wish there was a better way.

heard one guy ask his wife how far it was back to the Tram on Cannon.. (few hundred yds) I just laughed as I was on an 18mi day hike.

Niagra Falls is pretty depressing to go look at also with so much surrounding it.

" Mt. Elbert, CO "

Surely you don't mean this.

Maybe Mount Evans or Pikes Peak, but not Elbert.

-B.G.- is right, the only two 14ers in CO that you can drive to the very top are Pike's Peak and Mt. Evans. Mt. Antero does have a rough 4×4 road that goes fairly close to the summit though.

Unfortunate that the red is such a Canadian thing. Brown or dark green would be less of a deal.

Well, that and the trampling factor.

One of those balance things. Let the less robust folk have some experiences, but don't overdue it. Maybe all the chairlift rides of my youth influenced my interest in backpacking?

Sorry, yes, you are correct Evans.

We (my buddy who introduced me to mountain hiking) did Elbert even longer ago, via the Black Cloud Trail. I should remember because it was my first 14er. Guess it was the thin air.
