There’s been debate in the past as to whether opsak are actually as odor proof as they say, these are what Ziplock has as far as oversized bags, for those that like to use them as a bag to hold their various foods,

The various ZipLock sizes equate to,
L equivalent to 3 Gallon (11.4L) 1.25 FT. x 1.25 FT. (15″x15″, 38.1cm x 38.1cm)
XL equivalent to 10 Gallon (37.8L) 2 FT. x 1.7 FT. (24″x20.4″, 60cm x 51 cm)
XXL equivalent to 20 Gallon (75.7L) 2 FT. x 2.7 FT. (24″x32.4″, 60cm x 82 cm)

while the larger size opsack’s are,
12.25″ X 20.75″
28″ X 21″

Not to hijack your thread, but it was while reading your thread that the thought occurred:

What if one hung a piece of salami, unwrapped, in a tree, 50 meters from your actual food? Wouldn't that serve as a distraction to any black bear walking near your camp? Your goal would be to make that piece of salami as fragrant and widely-smelled as possible, while making your actual food stash 1/100 or 1/1000 of the odor of the distracting salami.

That seems possible. Unlike masking any food smell through your Opsack completely.

or it could just attract the bear or whatever other animal to your camp, and after it eats the pittance of a meal you provided, it smells your actual food stash (cause their sense of smell is just that good), and eats your actual food. Then when it's still hungry, it smells you and eats you too! =P

David, first of all, simply leaving food like that out within some of the national parks would have the feds down on you. If you just want to attract black bears, then try using some Oil of Anise (the licorice flavoring). Apparently black bears confuse it for the bear sex attractant. Just don't get any on you!

In the old days when we used to hang food, we sometimes hung up empty decoy bags with noise makers. That would distract the bears long enough for us to get out and defend the real food.

Besides, if you guys want something much better than ordinary polyethylene bags, then get some Nylofume bags. I honestly don't know where you can purchase them, but these are the gas-proof bags that termite tenting companies give out to their clients for food storage.

Pot growers here use turkey baking bags for storage/transport/odor control.

The DOLLAR TREE chain is where I've been getting my Ziplocks for a long time. Thick enough for trail use.

They have the usual sandwich-quart-1 gallon assortment, usually in boxes of 50/16/8 respectively. But they also have 2-gallon and often 2.5-gallon ziplocks, usually in boxes of 4 to 6 bags, depending who their supplier is at the moment. Good quality.

Whatever size the bag and however many to the box, everything's always exactly $1.00 per box. You can't beat it.

Also a good source for $1/quart UHT milk, candles, trail kitchen gear, Purell, $1/gallon water, wooden matches, hygiene/toiletries,
.5 Liter knockoffs of the Platypus bottles, dehydrated pasta/rice packets, etc.

Lots of good trail supplies at a Dollar Tree. Every item regardless of size/weight/quantity etc is always just $1.00.

Be aware that you can purchase many Amazon items on smile.amazon.com which makes a donation to the non-profit of your choice based on your purchase total. I donate to Backcountry Hunters and Anglers which advocates for public lands and preserving/expanding non-motorized areas.
