yes! you guys are awesome! now we're onto something!

annapurna's is awesome, wildtowner's is a tempting idea if I ever learn how to fabricate sh*t, and that krupilka is a rad post-lotto idea!! Casey, your sweetening the deal for sure buddy! miss you man! that stainless mug is an affordable thing of beauty. I want one of those even though it's not quite right!!

Similar to the one from the first LINK , this is the Tupperware version :

soup mug
http://order.tupperware.com/coe/app/tup_show_item.show_item_detail?fv_item_category_code=2002&fv_item_number=P10105239000
500ml (2 cups) looks light but no weight listed

I see that LINK also found the same in the meantime…

this is a less expensive version :

Make it, no fabrication, almost free:

Get a dollar-store auto sunshade (similar to reflectix), cut it to fit around the Ziplock container (1 circle + 1 long rectangle + 1 small strip for the handle) and duct tape it together. Attach the handle to the side BEFORE you tape on the bottom circle, and — voila — it's done for about $1.50 each!

BTW, I use one of those Ziplock containers for my bowl, and they wash up really easily in the backcountry.

Daryl, my link to the Arrow container with screw on lid and handle is under $8 shipped and he might get it cheaper locally or 4 for $15.99 shipped $4 each if he wanted more than 1 and it holds 16 oz.

I agree with Valerie. The Ziploc twistlocs from the grocery store work great. You can also get the sheets of craft foam for 99 cents at Michaels arts and crafts to use for a cozy/make it so you can hold it when hot.

How about the Sea to Summit Delta Bowl. I use it car camping and find it easy to hold. Your thumb fits right on top of the handle. There's also a version with a lid.

58 grams and 1.79USD for the little monkey bowl. 133 grams 1.99USD for the soup bowl with handle. The bowls are on the small side as they only hold 250ml. And I got the coolest whiskey tumbler ever plus a bunch of dealer bags for 1.19USD.monkeysoupcoolbags

Adan,

Maybe take your kids to a local ceramics shop where they can find something that hasn't been fired yet and give it a custom/food safe paint job.

We have a purple duck in our kitchen that our daughter painted when she was four or five. While it doesn't help with our hoarding issues, it definitely has some sentimental value that's hard to put a price tag on. Unfortunately purple duck is purely decorational where your kids' mugs would be decorative and functional so win win!

Ian, ceramic? I take it you dont have kids? :)

I've done some more looking around. There are some awesome ideas here, including some that just opened my search language and lead to exponentially more possibilities.

The sierra cup is designed to do exactly what I want. Cup and bowl with handle and tie loop. I have one, an vintage aluminum one, that I carry on many of my trips. It's main issue is that its much too small for a decent bowl, but the design, with it's steeply angled sides, is the perfect compromise between drink and solid food. So I thought, maybe there's a bigger one??

Cohlan's Jumbo Sierra Cup and Stansport X-large Sierra Cup.

$7 is the cheapest I can find though :/. I would prefer 20oz maybe, not sure. but man, now we are close. Thanks Roger for the idea.

Sierra cups come in different sizes and different metals. Most are either stainless steel or titanium.

Also consider the Cascade cup. It is similar, but the sides are somewhat more vertical. 16-ounce volume, as I recall.

The bowls from this set look pretty good – not sure if you can get them sold separately, although at $23 it might almost be worth just getting the set then selling off the pots.

edit:

this version has three bowls (and pot/pan set) for $25 with current 35% off coupon

Adan, great catch on the Vargo Titanium 750 Sierra cup. Perfect. Lid and all and found it for $20 on backcountrygear.com. I liked the Snow Peak set as well but twice the weight and I didn't need the extra cup if the bowl/mug was the right size/shape, which the Vargo was. Great piece of gear for solo use.
