We spend much of our days doing things that aren’t important; work-related drudgery, internet surfing, aimless daydreaming (as opposed to the productive kind which fuels our imagination), and numbing ourselves in front of the television. The days slip by and it is hard to say what was really accomplished during that time. Every now and again though, a moment comes along that feels “real”; where you connected with a person or a place, or made a difference in someone’s life. I had such a moment a few weeks ago on Michigan’s sunrise coast with my girls.

1
The best kid trips are not rigorously planned, but rather are simply allowed to unfold

2
Every rock and log is a potential source of entertainment

3
“I am a grumpy old troll. If you want to cross this bridge, you have to answer my riddle”

5
A grumpier old troll. “Daddy, you said there wouldn’t be any mosquitos”

4
Contemplating the shore of Lake Huron

6
An impromptu stage

8
Sisters

9
The girls seem to regard me as their own personal fashion photographer

10
Click. Pose. Click

11
Searching for a beach to play on

12
Never too young to learn how to bushwhack

13
“It’s a real dragon egg, daddy. If I keep it warm, it’s going to hatch”
Somehow, the “egg” found its way into my pack on the walk back

15
Bluebells and mosquito bites

14
The model emerges at first sight of camera

16
Returning to camp after a failed attempt to find a suitable beach

17
Kids are not good at avoiding poison ivy- even when warned repeatedly

19
Dinner as the sun sets

18
Kids don't dig dehydrated stuff

20
Up before dawn on a brisk fall morning

21
Lone heron soars over the sunrise coast

22
They somehow managed this all the way back

This was not a “perfect” trip, complicated by a bunch of factors, including the first middle-of-the-night tent-wetting I’ve experienced. I talked about it with the girls on the way back.

“I know things don’t always go as planned- sometimes it’s all mosquitos and poison ivy-”

“-and no beaches”, Rowan added

“But I love spending time with you doing these things”

“I love giving you wet willies in the tent”, Rowan replied

Life is finite. Make each moment count

Ike, nice to see you continue to enjoy the small moments for the big moments they truly are.

You often remind me of a favorite quote. Paraphrased: The truly important moments are there, if you want them to be. You just have to see that they're wrapped in beauty and hidden away between the seconds of your life.

Ike,

Good job sir. I took my son on his first camping trip this summer. It really makes you appreciate and treasure the special moments. It looks like your girls had a blast!

I really enjoy reports like this.

Ike,

As a father of two young girls, you and your girls continue to inspire. My oldest and I read your trip reports together to get ideas.

I'm just jealous about those matching kitten backpacks.
They don't make any cool gear for adults.

Beautiful kids Ike, I miss mine being that age.

Nice lil trip, Ike. Looks like your girls had a great time out with you.

The last photo could be inspiration for a JRB style quilt with two head holes :)

Ike,
I'v been struggling for a few months to get my kids out. Especially all three and my wife together, just seems like somebody gets sick or some event pops up that somebody cant miss. Each date we set, we get the gear out, get the machine in motion, only to be postponed again and again for whatever reason.

We have a third date set now, just a few weeks away. Thanks for your report, man. It's a reminder to keep trying, they're worth it.

Dude, you were stoked to experience that. Thing is, your girls were even more. Nice. Keep it up and as much as possible.
