I'm on the fence May1 is my grand daughters 14th birthday. Most likely if I stayed home that weekend she would not want to do anything anyway. But I will have to talk with her

I might be in. Are kids welcome? I have two boys ages five and seven that love backpacking and fishing.

Anybody willing to teach me how to fly fish? I bought a used Tenkara Rod and not really sure where to start with it.

Our wives all think we are goofy so you may be on to something.

I will try to reserve the Frontenac site. With the kids a shelter will be nice for cooking and hanging out if we get some weather. Will go for the nights of May 1 & 2.

Reservation is made for the nights of May 1 and 2 at the Frontenac State Park group camp. Let me know by around the middle of April who is coming so Josh and I can make plans. Also let us know about group meals. Right now I'm thinking group dinners and bkfst and lunch everyone on their own.

I just found out today that May 1-3 there is going to be a Midwest Tenkara Summit near LaCrosse Wisc. How much of a problem would it be moving the GGGG to April 25-28? Let me know what you think.

Due to the Midwest Tenkara Summit being held on May 2-3 I switched the reservations at Frontenac State Park to the nights of April 24-25.

Darn, forgot about that. Well option #3 could be May 1-3 but camping in SW Wisc at a place called Sidie Hollow. It is the opening weekend of trout and the Midwest Tenkara Fest is about 15 mies away. Guys, let me know if this is an option. The Driftless Area in SW Wisc has an incredible amount of public access for trout fishing. Mark R. What do you think?

I don't know, its getting complicated, I'm so confused. I don't even do tenkara, what if everyone makes fun of me beats me up and breaks my flyrod. Id feel like a sheepherder at a cattleranchers convention. Might just as well bring a 50 lbs pack also and tell you your all gonna die cause you dont have the right gear

Gosh, you Iowa guys and your insecurities. No, I thought we could just fish and not even tell them how you fish. Heck, Chris Zimmer from Zimmerbuilt is going to have a booth there.

Another option. I forgot about Esofea Park near Westby. It is actually much closer to Coon Valley.

We camped there last Sept and it is really nice. A trout stream runs right through it.
However, for both Sidie Hollow and Esofea, everyone would have to make their own reservations. Let me know what you guys and gals think.

I canceled the reservation at Frontenac State Park because of Midwest Mountaineering. I will be camping at Esofea Park near Westby Wisc the weekend of May 1-3. It should be easy to mix the GGGG with the Midwest Tenkara Fest. Hope to see a bunch of you guys there.

So, David, Is this more or less set in stone? If so, count me in, weather permitting of course. What time do you plan on being up there, and do you have a specific site picked out? Any details yet, cost, etc? Doug T.

Yes, it is set in stone for Esofea Park the nights of May 1-2. We have to make our own reservations. I will talk to the guy in charge of the Vernon County Parks tomorrow and see what he has to say about reserving ahead of time and what the cost will be.
Matt Sment from Badger Tenkara let me know that he will have a web site up for the show next week with a list of vendors and presenters. I will post the link as soon as I find out.
I will probably show up mid Friday PM.

Ouch, May is tough between a long standing annual Memorial Day weekend backpack trip and spring maintenance on "my" section of the SHT.

Jim which section do you maintain?

A good friend and I care for two contiguous segments between Lake County Demo Forest and Reeves Road.

We cover from the junction of the main trail and parking lot spur on the Demo Forest end to the third time the trail crosses Reeve's Road when heading northbound.

The Stewart River campsite is right at half way so we do it as a 2 day working backpack trip … great time.

It is not possible to exaggerate the satisfaction derived from helping with our favorite local trail … highly recommended.

NOW, my life would be complete if we could get the SHTA to produce an "SHT Happens … because of volunteers" T-shirt:-)

Indeed it is :) I maintain the section from Crosby Manitou to Caribou Wayside and the Horseshoe Ridge campsite in between. I lucked out several years ago when I had to give up the far north section when I was moving to the south shore and this one became available. It's my favorite section of the entire trail. Lake Demo is a close second though, loved day hiking up around there when I lived on the other side of the lake.

Was just curious, stranger things have happened than for you to have had the section next to mine and a very convenient shuttle share situation present itself :) The superior shuttle service has been great though, they generally comp my ride for the day being a volunteer. A class act.
