I'm a regular winter camper and 50% of the time I am in a tent with a stove. I have some cheap REI down booties that do alright but I've been longing for some goosefeet gear down socks and over booties.

My question is; I don't plan on wearing these around a campfire outside a bunch and running around, but will they hold up to some moderate wear in the tent (sitting around) and during nature calls from the tent to the treeline. I guess the "down sock" labeling has me a bit nervous of their durability.

The down booties are perfect for inside a tent and the over boots for outside.

I've had my eye on the Goosefeet combo for a while, but can't pull the $110 trigger. However, I'm starting to get my girlfriend into the backcountry with me, and she runs about 20 degrees cooler than me (or so it seems) and down booties may be a requirement for her. I was thinking about getting some of those calf-length tyvek lab booties from amazon and cutting a section of CCF for the insole and using those for overbooties. Tyvek is obviously not as tough as dyneema, but much much cheaper

The material is so think on the down booties they would not hold up to outside wear.
Get the overboots too.

Also… Feathered Friends has a down booty with an overboot… standard fill is more so they would be warmer.

You can get down booties for way cheaper than $110. I remember seeing some $25 down booties at REI one time.

From context I can figure out that "think" is a typo for "thin" not "thick" which is what I thought first.

Now, for a competition for the cleverist typos, or the cleverist mis-interpretation of typos…

Yes you can, but you also get what you pay for. The REI ones are bulky, heavy, and have the overbooty built in (meaning no good for using inside your quilt or tent). I did pull the trigger for the goose feet ones and frankly, it has been, hands down, the best $110 I've ever spent on gear. EVER.

I finally figured out how to use my goose feet down socks with over booties. I removed the rubber inner sole from the over bootie. This allows me to wear the down socks and if I need to walk around for any reason I put the overbooties over the down socks then slide my feet into my shoes. This protects the down socks..keeping them dry and clean and allows me to walk around freely without hurting my feet. This is not for extended period of time, just for bathroom calls and what not during the night if I need to step out for a few minutes.

Feathered Friends down booties include the inner down sock and removable outer shell, similar to Goosefeet, but more down filling and cheaper at $89.00 for both. Also, the inner down sock has a tougher bottom that would be good for some 'night calls'.

No regrets with the Feathered Friends one here either. Kicking myself not buying a pair years ago.

If I was getting the overbooties again, I'd go for the thicker sole. I have the overbooties in Dyneema X and while totally adequate and I've used them for many nights out snow camping, I think I'd prefer the structure of the thicker bottom.

This is why I remove the rubber sole..it's simple to put the sock on, if I need to walk around camp at all I put the over bootie over the down sock then loosen the laces on my shoe/boots and slide my feet in them. The overbooties protect the down socks if my shoes are wet. Works perfectly. Plus I save the weight and space from having to carry those rubber insoles.

In our climate I've never actually worn the overbooties, but I second Jennifer on the down booties – they are the BEST! Quality is awesome, and the light construction of the inner bootie means it's perfect for wearing inside a quilt.

Using the overboot sans sole inside a shoe/boot for outside use sounds perfect!

Highly recommended.
