I have been a happy Sawyer Mini user all summer, but I've been off-trail for about a month and a half since my JMT thru.

I'm starting to poke through my gear to get ready for my fall trips, and I've realized that since I finished up my JMT trip at the end of July, I left my mini in the bottom of my bag to sit. (I came back to a really nasty work situation, and I haven't really had the chance to unpack, with the exception of my down gear and other stuff that shouldn't be stored stuffed in a backpack.)

My question is this- since I assume that it's not great to leave a wet filter sitting around for a month and a half, are there any cleaning steps I should take beyond Sawyer's instructions for long-term storage (fill up a bladder with a diluted bleach solution, push it into the filter, and leave it for awhile)? I assume that I've provided a nice environment for all sorts of fun stuff to be growing in there, but I do want to get everything cleaned up for when things cool down here in a few weeks and I can get back outside.

Normally, during the season, I make sure to backflush it every day or two, but I honestly just completely forgot about it once I got back from my trip.

I would suggest backflushing it with a couple of syringes of clean water, and if all is going well, dilute a little bit of bleach in some more water and give it a few good backflushes with the solution. You could let that sit for a couple of hours, and then backflush it again with some more clean water to remove any left over bleach.

If it is backed up, the good thing is these are pretty cheap… my local WalMart sells them for $19!

Sanitation
Before storing your filter, Sawyer recommends sanitizing your filter. This process is simple: Back flush filter. Run a standard bleach solution (fragrance free) through your filter (one cap of bleach per quart of water). Let air dry and then store in a cool, dry place OR store wet and clean before using.
