I have recently moved to Altra Lone Peaks, which has made it necessary for me to adopt gaiters to keep stuff out of my shoes. I'm using lightweight gaiters like Dirty Girls, but from a different company, Running Funky. I haven't had any problems on day hikes, but on the last day of my 5 day backpacking in Oregon, when I was cleaning up in the hotel, I found that I had a rash/chafing on the backs of my ankles where the gaiters rubbed. there was a similar rash at the top of my sock on one ankle.
Does this happen to others? I wash my legs every night before bedtime, so I don't feel like it was a hygiene issue. We were hiking around the Three Sisters, so lots of volcanic pumice/grit. I shaved my legs right before the hike, but don't "maintain" on the trail–maybe just 5 days stubble?
Do others use Body Glide or similar at the top of their gaiters? Seems like ointment would just attract dirt.
