You don't usually hear too much 'Gear Talk' about socks but this year I found out how valuable a good pair can be. Two weeks ago I returned from completing the JMT: 210 miles of dirt, loose granite, and sand. Like most if us here, I wear mesh trail runners, and my feet were filthy as hell nearly all day long. For two weeks I washed both pair of Darn Tough Micro Crew Ultralight socks several times a day, sometimes more: wringing them as hard as possible for faster drying, knocking them against stone, and some days putting them on wet (stretching them over my feet). In addition to this harsh daily treatment, I took out my insoles, so the socks were rubbing against the plastic foam of the shoe for ten to eleven hours a day. Tremendous friction. And yet! And yet! And yet! despite this strenuous abuse, those socks were F'in Fantabulous! Truly unbelievable. Last season, I used another company's merino socks and they lasted as long as to be expected under such conditions–but Darn Tough socks went far beyond. They showed no signs of stress nearly the entire trip, until the very end. Even then, on one pair, a tiny hole developed in the big toe, (I forgot to clip my toe nails beforehand). Easily mended on the trail. These socks are Darn Tough, indeed, however, I like to think of them as: Tough As Shit socks. Their Micro Crew Ultralight socks are advertised to cyclists and runners, but in my opinion, they are perfect for ul backpacking: the thin merino dried fast, and also kept my feet warm when wet. To top it off, they are made in Vermont. Give em a try.

I totally agree — they wear like iron (but a lot more comfortable!). I've got them in a number of styles, love them all and they look like new after washing (something they don't get frequently). No blisters, either.
They are by far my favourite sock brand. I wear almost nothing else these days. Good to hear they will continue to serve me well.
For a mostly wool sock they even dry fast. I did some laundry a few days ago and I put out some wigwam ironman 1/4 socks (synthetic, virtually thiny-thin nylon bike socks, but they dry very fast), some Patagonia silkweight underwear, and some darn tough UL 1/4 socks to dry. Silkweight Capilene dries really fast, but when I went back a couple of hours later to check, the darn tough socks were as dry as the wigwams, and the Capilene was still damp! For a mostly wool sock this seem like a magical power.
They also reduce your total weight and cure foot cancer.
Why not post this in Reader Gear Reviews? It's clearly exactly the sort of testimonial that belongs there.
I would assume DT socks have been done to death by reviews over the years, both on here, and in the webosphere at large, but you have a point.
I have several pairs of Darn Toughs and the wool is starting to wear along the top of the sock. Haven't worn the boot socks that much and they're really showing wear there. Looks like the merino is coming away while the nylon is staying, so you get these "faded" spots where there's less material.
I have a pair of wool boot socks from Fox River I've owned 10x as long and they look 2x as new.
I don't wear anything else.
I work at a small outdoor store and I've sold a lot of darn tough socks.
Basically I tell people they are:
tough
unlimited lifetime replacement
made in the usa
about the same price as smartwool.
it's an easy sell.
I didn't know that poop was especially tough, smelly yes, tough, not so sure. Well, thinking about it…not to be graphic, but there have been some blow out events..and let's just say, that if you don't clean the toilet bowl quickly, that stuff does seem to turn into concrete.
So yes, i concur, tough as poop, does actually make sense….
More seriously, appreciate the feedback. I'm looking for some ultra tough, long lasting socks that are less insulative than the Merino based ones. I've looked at the Duluth Trading Co socks that are supposed to be super tough, considering that they are mostly nylon with some tencel (which has a tenacity slightly below polyester), it makes sense. Should be also more cool and quick drying, if not as thick.
I took two pairs of Darn Tough seamless ladies socks (striped, I really like the pink and blue ones) on my PCT hike this year, I wore them the first seven hundred miles and then I had to switch to Wrightsocks but the Darn Toughs are still very wearable. Pretty awesome, I can't remember how many times I rinsed them out with just plain water and they performed great every day, they are just a bit faded now but I still wear them.
Actually Reader Reviews is an unloved section of this site. So few entrees as of late. This certainly qualifies.
They're pretty much all I wear as well. Great socks.
I have two pairs, I can't remember the first model but it is holding up perfectly, its a bit thicker and longer. The second one I think is a micro crew. Not so good. Similar issues to Max, with the merino (I think) coming away from the Nylon, but on the base of the socks, both of them. The nylon is like stocking material. Bit dissapointing, I'm hoping its a once off, as otherwise I really like the sock.
I'm contemplating sending them back, but postage could kill that idea (Aus to US).
