I have an MLD bivy and a MLD tarp. The bivy has some shock cord to lift up head end of the bivy that came with a mitten hook at the end. The tarp has midden hook on its underside. Why do they have mitten hooks at both ends? Connecting the two and getting the right tension is a bit awkward. Am I missing something?

I am thinking about attaching O-ring to the end of the shock cord of the bivy and adding a line-loc to control the tension. Does anyone else have a preferred solution?

Whenever I carry the tarp and bivy I always seem to have clear skies. I usually just cowboy camp or attached the cord of the bivy to a tree or plant. The last trip with my bivy made me decide to address this minor issue after 3 years.

Hi Dave. When is audiafauna going to release another album! :-)

As to your question, why bother with an o-ring? Get a cord loc that's large enough for your cord to pass through twice. Thread the cord through the cord loc, through the mitten hook on the tarp, and then back through the cord loc and tension as appropriate. GG even sells two-hole cord locs if you wanted to go that route.

Brilliant! Thanks Doug!

I just backpacked with my friend Alexis two weeks ago. She has said Audiafauna is on the shelf for an unknown period of time. However, she recently recorded a song love with the lead singer that you can see here:

Blood and Bones

Alexis has also been recording and performing with Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra. You can check out their album and a music video here:

I caught them live on New Years Eve in Santa Cruz and they are tremendous performers. Their albums is also excellent and I would not be surprised to see them achieve great success.

Her boyfriend Chris plays the violin in the group. They hiked the JMT together two years ago and although he unaware of BPL he was geeking out about gear weight, which she still makes fun him about. I think I will invite them to the GGG this year. I hope to see you there if not sooner.

But what if you using a bivy made by someone else? Easy enough to include the hook during construction. So why not do so?

Best solution I've heard of is a hole just big enough for the shock cord to go through the netting with a cord lock on the inside. That way you can adjust it while inside.

I suspect that MLD puts mitten hooks everywhere to keep there products as universal as possible. They can't assume that everyone will buy both their tarp and their bivy, etc. And mitten hooks are pretty adaptable. Put a loop of cord through one, and you're done, for instance. Or cut the one off the bivy shock-cord and tie a loop in the end. Etc.
