On BPL and several other forums, I have seen people post questions about GPS/Map app, asking what is the best option. I just wanted to hear feedback and also to point out an app that seems to often be overlooked, OruxMaps.

OruxMaps has become my replacement for GPS/Maps, often when I can not get good maps such as traveling overseas, but also because it can use so many kinds of maps.

OruxMaps allows me to use Google or Bing maps including the Terrain maps completely offline. It also uses maps from http://www.openandromaps.org/en/ and can use maps from gpsfiledepot.com

Plus it is completely free with the option to donate being truly an option. No ads either way or difference in functionality.

I would be interested to hear from those who have used OuxMaps and also those who have used other mapping/GPS apps.

I tried out Orux a few years ago and didn't like the interface and lack of options.

The offline usage of Google and Bing maps is probably unauthorized. You can trick other apps like BCN and Gaia to use those map sources too, but it isn't officially supported because Google forbids this use.

I haven' used it again recently because I'm happy with the apps I have, but I may look at it again to see if they've improved things.

I use Gaia on the iPhone but my next phone will be an Android and I'll use Gaia because you can use custom maps with the app.

I create calibrated custom maps for my cycle touring trips and over the Christmas period I'm off to Burma. I use the Maps N Trax on the iPhone but it's got a steep learning curve and I don't use it enough to master it, so Gaia on an Android is the solution to my custom mapping problems.
