I bought the Six Moon Designs Fusion 65 because I was interested in the hip belt, the suspension and the pack weight. When I received it, the harness (what they call the "yoke") did NOT fit at all — it was clearly made for the male anatomy.

I didn't even want to try putting weight in the pack with a harness that fit me that badly, so I developed a MYOG hack that replaces the SMD harness with that of a women's pack.

This way, you can purchase any "replaceable" harness from any brand of pack — so you KNOW it will fit you properly!

I bought a Women's "small" Osprey harness (for the Ariel) on eBay for +/- $15. I then modified that Osprey harness to fit onto the Fusion body. It's a beginner/intermediate sewing project — mostly it just requires the patience to neatly rip all those stitches!

Here's the how-to for anyone out there who wants to do this:

Cut around the sides of the velcro on the new harness, and carefully remove all the stitching with a seam ripper, until you completely detach the velcro.

Using the SMD "yoke" as your guide, line up the straps, and trace around the SMD yoke. Cut the new yoke slightly smaller.

If using the Osprey, you'll need to cut out and sew a piece of nylon fabric where the velcro used to be. Then attach a trimmed-down piece of the velcro that you removed earlier.

Next, I sewed grosgrain ribbon around the edges of the new yoke.

Finally, because the Osprey harness uses 1" webbing for the load lifters, while SMD uses 3/4" webbing, I replaced part of the webbing on the Osprey with 3/4", securing it with 3 rows of bar tacks. (I tried to "hide" the transition under one of the Osprey's existing straps.)

Edited to add: I sold the MYOG harness at cost to a member whose wife liked the pack, but had the same issues as I did with the stock "yoke", so at least it will get some use! :^)

Awesome!

I too was not impressed by their "yoke" and it's fit

How do you like the rest of the pack?

I think you've successfully mated a fusion with an osprey!

What a beautiful baby!!!

When I first got into rock climbing, I purchased an Osprey pack for carrying the gear to the cliffs.

I don't remember the model name as it was about 16 years ago, but I needed a very large capacity pack because I was carrying all the gear for 5 people.

Being a short torso guy, I had to modify the harness area of my pack by 3 inches which for me was a massive undertaking. No real sewing experience.

My hack job took 3 tries and I was only slightly modifying the harness that came with it.

You did a fantastic job!! You must have mad sewing skills!

This is sensationally good! Inspiring!

I just did an ebay search and found the harness pieces you mention. I almost can't believe how cheap they are. The Osprey hipbelts too, they are only US$12.75 plus postage. That's nuts. Superb options to make MYOG packs easier. And that price kind of blows away the price charged by SMD for their hipbelt.

Just curious Valerie. What size yoke did you order with your SMD Fusion?

Great idea to start with and nice execution. Let us know how you like the results.

Didn't expect this thread to be resurrected, but here are some answers to questions…

Ken, I ordered the Fusion 65 with the "regular" harness. According to SMD, the difference between the "reg" and "small" was only in the length — my problem was that the SMD harness was too wide (length was fine), and spanned from my neck all the way out to the tip of my shoulders(!). I had to MYOG, because their other sizes would have been just as wide.

Adam, eBay is a great source for Osprey-brand shoulder straps/hipbelts at dirt-cheap prices, and they can usually be modified to fit whatever pack you're using…or for a pack you're building from scratch. The weakness with the Osprey stuff is that some of it is a bit heavy.

Jimmy B — in the end, I didn't keep the SMD pack because I wanted more pack features (pockets, etc.). I thought the suspension on the Fusion was great, but that the packbag and harness needed some work (IMHO). I ended up buying the Klymit/Elemental Horizons Motion 60 (which I also modified, LOL, but in different ways). There's a discussion thread on that pack in "Gear".

Thanks for the reply Valerie.

I emailed the ebay vendor about the weight of the osprey hipbelts he lists, and he reckons 6oz (men's medium). That is a LOT lighter than the mid weight One Planet hipbelt I just removed from another pack I have, half the weight in fact. If its correct, and the hipbelt also works nicely for me, then it will be quite a weight saving. I just emailed him about the weight of a men's medium shoulder yoke. Given that these parts are for large loads, I think that weight is quite reasonable. I mean, an SMD flight hipbelt is 10oz! That has pockets of course but they would only add 1-2oz.

This is exciting, I think I could build a killer pack using these two components and the excellent (5oz) stay from my one planet pack. HMG Porter killer…
