The Snow Leopard Cub Cooking System

Snow Leopard Cub

I took it on as a challenge to see if I could develop an alcohol cooking system for beer can sized pots. It took several iterations but I think I finally nailed it. My objectives were to develop a small windscreen that could either wrap around the pot or store inside the pot. The complete cooking system (windscreen, pot support pins, heat shield and stove) weigh 1.8 oz. or 51 grams. The windscreen is made of 0.003” 302 stainless steel. The system will boil 2 cups of 70 water using 17 ml of denatured alcohol and reach a boil in about 9 minutes. This system is a stand-alone system and is not compatible with our other stoves. One odd thing about the stove is that the carbon felt relaxes after exposure to alcohol. It takes approximately 3 burns for the carbon felt to stabilize. The first burns takes a few minutes longer and then the time to boil settles out to about 9 minutes. You can also use Esbit with this system, though it burns a little fast and not as efficient as our other stoves. With Esbit, time to boil was ~6 minutes and flame out at 9 minutes. In the center sitting in the Snow Leopard Cub windscreen is a Batchstoves anodized pot (his beer can repalcement pot). To the left , the windscreen is rolled up an inserted into a Foster’s can.

A limited numbers of prototypes have been made and they are being offered exclusively to people who follow backpackinglinght ($27.50 + shipping). Follow the link below to go directly to our store. Our international shipping software has a mind of its own so it would be best to contact me directly and I can send you an invoice.

1. Which part is made of carbon fiber?

2. What do you use for the alcohol burner? It can't be the thing on the right, because you called that a replacement pot.

3. What do you use for the Esbit burner?

I editted the post for clarity. I use carbon felt and the fibers tend to shrink and compress a bit after being soaked in alcohol and heated.

The small round item to the right of the base of the windscreen is the stove (silver cylinder with black on the inside and a small hole in the center). Inside the assembled wndscreen is Batchstove's anodized pot. Sam designed his pot as a replacement for beer cans.

I placed the Esbit on a simple, small flat tray (not shown). The BGET is too tall.

I hope that this clarifys the post, sorry for the confusion.
