Hi all,
Pretty excited. After tinkering with a whole lot of parts, most notably from Trail Designs, Flat Cat Gear, Evernew, Anti-Gravity Gear and my own DIY pieces, I think I may have combined parts to create the sweetest esbit stove yet. And now I'd love some feedback from all of you.
If you don't want to read the lengthy post – here's the gist:
WEIGHT – 2oz or 2.6oz with cozy!
BOIL – 6.5min in 35F with wind
FUEL – 8g esbit w/o cozy, 4g w/ cozy
VOLUME – 1.5 cups. 2 with MLD cup
PACKABLE – fully inside the cup
STABILITY – completely stable
Details and photos below:
BEFORE
I started with the fantastic Trail Designs kit "Evernew 400ml Cup + Sidewinder Ti-Tri Bundle"
http://www.traildesigns.com/stoves/evernew-400ml-cup-sidewinder-ti-tri-bundle
The kit worked well, (esp. at altitude) but GramCracker didn't seem as efficient, the cup had no lid, the liquid didn't boil fast enough and I felt the overall system could still be lighter.
AFTER
I modified the base of the latest Flat Cat Gear Focus Fire 14 stove. (FF14 in alpha product stage) Using light titanium I cut out a smaller base with edges that clip the FF14 solidly in place. (no more air holes on bottom from twisting) I also added two openings on each side of the base for easy match lighting while the stove sits inside the base. This helped avoid two downsides of FF14 – twisting and potential burn. Now the base always sits squarely on the bottom and there are no air holes. The stove can easily clip out of the base and still be flattened for packing. I would love to see this base modification make it to Jon's finalized FF14.

Next, I added a DIY thick aluminium foil lid with minimal duct tape handle. The lid can be folded in two to become completely flat. The diameter is about .6in larger to wrap along the top. The lid will last for a three week trip.

Then I asked George “Tin Man” of Anti Gravity Gear to make a custom cozy for the cup. This helps finish the boil, if needed, reduces esbit and keeps the liquid cold for 70 minutes in the cold. I use the cozy lid as additional heat reflection when cooking – added on top of aluminium lid. Extra lid reduces boiling time by about 10-20 seconds.

The cup – I took the handles of the Evernew 400ml cup (could be MLD 475ml cup). The cozy lid can be used to grab the pot off the stove when hot. Works well.
Finally, I cut out a circe out of a shopping bag to help house the parts inside the pot without scratches or contact with metal.
THE RESULTS:
– SUPER-EFFICIENT – 6.5 minute boil time in 35F weather with wind! 8g of esbit.
– HYPER-EFFICIENT – 4 minute stove time if you finish the boil in the cozy. 1.5 cups = one tiny 4g piece of esbit
– COMPACT – whole system lives inside the cup + has .35L of available space for gear. Sidewinder doesn't stick out w/ cozy
– SUL – Weight: 2oz no cozy. 2.57oz w/ cozy. I now carry 50% less esbit because of the efficiency
– STABILITY – most stable system I've used. The pot literally doesn't move!
– PROTECTION – cozy on the outside also packs and protects the overall system and does not need a stuff sack.
– GOOD LOOKS – looks sweet with aluminum lid (I think)
The system uses two tent stakes which I add to the tent after cooking is done. It's super stable – you all know the stability of the Caldera. You can also add the tiny Snow Peak Hot Lips when drinking tea from cup. Doesn't add to weight, really.
That's all. Super curious to your feedback and suggestions!
Cheers,
Gary

P.S. Big thanks to John Abela. I learned quite a bit from his blog and this video:
