I've been working on some Paleo recipes and ideas for backpacking. Brian's Backpacking Blog posted a link today to Paleo Meals to Go. Only a few products and not all that high in calories (olive oil enter stage left) but hope to see more from them in the future.

P.S. I'll tell you the same thing I told my co-worker… dinosaur is delicious although since it was from the Mesozoic period, it was a little gamey.

I have had some contact with these folks. Pricey meals. One could easily make a similar meal for half the price.

"One could easily make a similar meal for half the price."

Agreed (if not a third) and $9.50 in shipping made me pause before completing the transaction. I figured I'd throw them some business and support with the hopes that they'll stay in business long enough to expand upon their selection.

I figure between those who are on the Paleo diet and others who are Gluten Free, there's a market for these guys.

Hopefully the pricing and shipping will come down over time.

Some companies can't make a profit on the products, so they attempt to make profit on the high shipping fees.

I have reviewed 2 of the 3 meals and I can tell you that they are phenomenal in taste. Yes, it was my review that Brian linked to :-)

Is it pricey? Yes, but you get what you pay for – the beef one is nearly all meat. It will fill you up, and not salt you out.

As for shipping, they are a very small company. Shipping isn't cheap!! A Flat Rate box is over $12 now :-P I know, I ship stuff all the time. They are not making a profit on it.

PS: Yes, you can do it yourself, but be warned, a tub of freeze-dried beef isn't cheap either.

All I saw was the link but I never clicked on it or realized that it was yours. Glad to hear that the food is good. Just received notification from PayPal that they shipped my package today and look forward to trying it out in the very near future.

I've tried the beef meal, it's really good. Just wish I could afford more, their food is very satisfying. Just too expensive to use much.

Thanks for the link. I especially like hearing "it won't salt you out" because that's something that bugs me about most pre-packaged backpacking meals. WAY too much salt.

I generally eat paleo style while I'm in the city.

It's a good starter diet since it's elimination and you can generally find out what foods make you sick.

However, carbs are your friends. If you can add wheat, oats, etc into your diet – go for it.

Carbs are awesome!

I eat normal backpacking food when I'm in the wilderness. Oatmeal… Grains, etc. The biggest thing I had problems with was dried fruit. Now I just eat less of it and I'm generally pretty good.

Not sure if that's directed at me but I have no intention of going carb free.

Not a complete menu but there will be >75% cacao chocolate, organic maple syrup, quinoa, honey, homemade paelo bars, rice etc throughout the day.

Yes very helpful in fact. About halfway down that page was a link similar to a recipe I'm going to work on this weekend, chicken curry. I'll probably do mine with rice cooked with chicken stock or quinoa instead of spaghetti squash though.

Had a chance to eat all three of their meals this weekend.

I think they all had quality ingredients. While the beef stew was good, it feels like it's missing something since there's no au jus or gravy but was fine. I'll probably look to add something Paleo friendly to make it more like traditional stew but not sure what that will be as of right now.

It seems like for all three, the necessary water as posted on the package was a bit much and all three were soupier that I'd normally like.

Seeing that I paid $44.49 for three meals (includes >$9 postage), doubt I'll order from them more than once or twice per year.

Bottom line, great quality but difficult to justify the price tag in my mind.

I'm happy to see products of this type becoming more available, but, considering the high price tag, I think I'll keep making my own meals. I make a mean Pork Green chili that should dehydrate well. Otherwise, I will eat rice when BPing, and that opens up a LOT of possibilities for BPing meals (Coconut chicken curry, Italian style tomato beef rice). Actually, the curry could be easily made without rice, too– would just require a lot more chicken.
