Smartwool Shadow hoodie available

Any details on the price of the hoodie?

$100.00 That's the original retail. Maybe I should have asked for a better price seeing that this is year? old stock but I was happy to find it and get the service.

David made it all to easy. Called BAP and ordered one. I have to know what all the fuss is about. At least it will retain its value if cared for!

The girl I spoke with did not seem to know much about it, but she took my order and said they would call me when the order comes in. They did not ask for any credit card or other info. Hopefully they will come through! Is this the same ordering experience that others had?

Edit: just got a call back from BAP and was told they cannot get one.

I was able to order one through my local smartwool dealer. Got it today just in time for it to go back up to 95 degrees today. It is def all I was hoping it would be though :)

I called up New England Backpacker in Worcester MA and asked them to see if they could order it. They called the dealer warehouse and they were still avaliable. They had it in less than a week. I am guessing any Smartwool dealer could do this. Good luck, I am 6'4" 200 lbs and it fit me perfectly…

I contacted Smartwool and they referred me to a local dealer (Hiking Shack in Phoenix,AZ). The guy there was really helpful and ordered me one from their distributor. Sweet! The price was $100. Nice to know you can still get one before they go the way of the dinosaur.

Just to be a jerk, I thought I'd mention that I just found one on closeout for $40 in a store. If they had more, I'd have bought them all for you folks, but since there was only one, and it's in my size, I'm keeping it. I would have never noticed it but for you all talking about it lately, so thanks!

Jaiden, thanks for rubbing that in.. ha ha.. These shadow hoodies are becoming a classic, cult item here at BPL. Gotta have a Platypus, a mini-bic, a hoodie, and a Thermawrap.

Good find man, it's always a great feeling when you find a deal like that. I'll find another screaming deal one of these days on some other piece of gear and get back atcha :-)

All you suckers rushing out to buy these shadow hoodys. I have a feeling that somehow through sod's law, there will be, in the next 24 hours, a smartwool shade hoody, that is lighter, warmer, more breathable, and cheaper than the bargain bin. And I'll get the first one ; )

I also received my Smartwool hoody from BAP last week and just wore it for the first time this weekend. It looks nice enough to wear to a wedding. It will be my new standard for city related outdoor activities in moderate weather. Secondarily I may use it for long duration wilderness trips, with others for odor control. The only downside for me is that the hood fits too loose to seal closely against heat loss and I normally wear size XL hats.

The Ibex Shak Hoody is equally sharp looking for city wear and for me has a much better fitting hood than the Smartwool hoody. I believe that it is best suited for city related outdoor activities in cold weather.

The size L hoody specs, that are applicable as versatile base layers, are as follows:

Smartwool Hoody weight 12.5 oz and .045" loft
Ibex Shak Hoody (Merino wool) weight 21.0 oz and .080” loft
Patagonia R1 (Power Dry) Hoody weight 13.0 oz and .080" loft
Ragged Mountain Hoody (Power Stretch) Hoody weight 13.5 oz and .130" loft

For moderate weather wilderness related activities I recommend the Patagonia R1 hoody because of its better weight/warmth ratio and quicker drying time than Merino wool.

For cold weather wilderness related activities I recommend the Ragged Mountain Hoody because it has the best weight/warmth ratio and quicker drying time than Merino wool. In addition, the crotch strap on this garment creates a reliable waist seal by preventing it from riding up during white water swims or when sleeping.

My dad just got the corny new icebreaker catalog, and it had a hoody with thumbholes made out of midweight fabric i think…

Thanks for listing the four products and specs. I'd been considering the Wild Things hoody. Is there a reason you left it off your list? Thanks in advance.

SK – There is no zip to ventilate the WT hoody. I find the primary benefit of a hoody, in combination with a wind shirt, is the wide range of temps that can be quickly adjusted for. From moderate to cold – 1) zipper down, sleeves up, and hood down, 2) zipper partially up and sleeves down, 3) zipper all the way up, and 4) hood up and thumbs in the thumb holes.

If your primary objective is maximum warmth, as apposed to wide temperature adjustability, the WT hoody is an excellent choice.

I suppose the only glaring issue with the Wild things powerstretch is that it doesn't have a zipper, which is a bit of a bummer. I suppose it would be easy to sew one in without adding too much weight. Sometimes people over look Wild Things with their heavier but well built gear (spectra ice sack!), but their wind shirts are 2.5 oz, and they make some great Epic jackets and of course this hoody, and some powershield tights for 13 oz, perhaps the ultimate lightweight winter backpacking bottoms, especially now that the golite propel is gone.

Yeah… if I would have had more in my allowance account, Prolite’s sample sale on icebreaker would have drained it. As it stands I have to ‘settle’ for my 15% off ‘pretty much everything in stock’ (including a healthy selection of icebreaker) at my local Backwoods (bar none, the most generous BSA discount I have found. There’s not much reason for me to shop for the ‘big brands’ [Snowpeak, Jetboil, Icebreaker, Patagonia, MSR, etc] online anymore)
