Anyone have any suggestions? I like that it's tough, but wow it hurts my hands when I need to slide my hands in a big pocket of it. I'd love to be able to soften it up a bit so I can keep most of the ruggedness without so much scraping going on…..

I'm particularly thinking of the kind of mesh ULA uses in the circuit. I do like the stretchy stuff Gossamer Gear uses, but I'd rather have more tear resistance for this desert hiking I'm doing now.

Wash it. It softens up a bit. There must be some sizing or something in it that washes out. You are talking about the pocket mesh correct? The 3D mesh is used on straps quite often and has a soft hand when new.

Just to make things clear, 3D mesh has mesh/foam/fabric. For backpanel of pack or shoulder/waist straps. I think you're talking about a different product if it's a pocket.
