@ Daniel said..

Try having Cedar allergies in central Texas, you'll sneeze so much pee will be shooting out of every orifice not blocked by snot. No panty is safe! Might have to move the family somewhere without Cedar.

LOL, we had this conversation at work just the other day….I didn't get cedar fever until the last year I lived in Austin…..not fun!…in fact I think it's the reason I now suffer from seasonal allergies elsewhere….either that or I'm just getting old.

Have to say for a post titled "Alright ladies"……there sure are a lot of guys chiming in :-D

To stay on topic, I wear both Patagonia active wear panties and as blasphemous as it will sound here, cheap big box nylon that seem to dry faster when wet (from water crossings, lol)YMMV.

My favorite is Ibex Balance Briefs. Merino wool, fairly fast drying, no seams. I brought one pair of those and one pair of Ex-Officio bikini briefs on a 3 week trip last summer, and strongly prefered the Ibex wool panties by the end of the trip. Both dried fine during the day on the back of my pack, but the wool felt a lot nicer, and I really liked the seamless feel for ease of washing.

Next trip, I'll bring two pairs of the Ibex and none of the synthetic, and cut the liners out of my running shorts before I head out.

Synthetic if I do, cheap pair from Target's or other discount stores. They dry fast and are light. Generally, I go commando. I wash up at night, and sleep in either running shorts without the inner brief or silk long johns, depending on the time of year and temps. Monkey Butt for women is really nice, but commando allows me to not have to deal with anti-chaff products. : 0

For short trips, Target synthetics are fine, but for longer outings, Smartwool bikinis — often (but not always) available on Sierra Trading Post for +/- $15…

I wear one and have two spares. Something about putting on a clean pair of undies is nice, after a sponge bath, at the end of the day. When/if I start to "sneeze", I'll probably take pantiliners. Also make sure everything is in good health before you leave. But sweat, heat, and exertion could bring on infection, so consider putting a Monistat (or similar) in your First Aid kit, if that might be an issue. Adding some dried cranberries to your snacks could also be a good idea.

I think in the spirit of UL, why not just resort to commando? Nothing to buy, nothing to carry, nothing to wash, nothing to chafe. Long johns are one thing…but if I'm not wearing them to keep warm, why not just keep it out of the picture all together? One less thing rubbing me the wrong way, bunching up or needing maintenance.

…but on the note of undies….maybe pre-washing them with Dr. Bronner's tea tree oil soap and/or bringing it along on the trip to wash them would be a good option to kill any bacteria and/or funk that may occur. It works wonders in that regard.

I think this is why the OP was asking WOMEN. Different "equipment" requires that we use different equipment! :~)

KJ…..it's hard to explain without TMI, but going commando is not always an option with most women.

PostedFeb 3, 2014 at 6:02 pm

I agree that commando isn't an option for some of us. With exertion or hot weather, I like something light and form-fitting; sometimes it's my own skin that "rubs me the wrong way."

Jennifer made me do it…
With apologies to Julie Andrews….

Getting cool gear from my uncles and aunties,
Backpacking all day with no pee on my panties,
Even going commando when I can do without strings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Multi-day hikes with no funk down below,
I don't need the Monistat to maintain my 'glow',
A cool breeze can make my parts whistle and sing,
These are a few of my favorite things!

Doug, you are the BPL poet in residence. Brilliant! Your poem was the laugh I needed and reminded me of this. The two made my night.

Dave's wife here.

I Love going commando with a roomy pair of shorts in the summer. If you can do it, do. Give your "undercarriage" a bottle wash often (I tried braless too but the nipple chafing was too much!)

I suppose if I had the pee problem I'd just try and make sure to have TP at hand and wash my (fast drying) shorts often. In the past I have worn merino briefs but I'm sorry to say they still stink – even washing them with soap in the wilderness doesn't work for me. Obviously when washed more thoroughly at home they are back to perfect!

YMMV, but maybe give it a go towards the end of your next trip – you can always put them back on if it doesn't work.

"A cool breeze can make my parts whistle and sing,"

And all this time I thought it was the marmots whistling as I passed by….

I've always dreamt that a man would write a poem for me………

Yeah, the "sneezing issue" is relatively new…I thought of bringing pantiliners or pads, but again, on a quick weekend or short 3-4 day trip none of this is an issue. My problem crept up at the 10 day or so mark…and talk about not wanting to carry THAT garbage around with me for a week and a half between garbage cans!!!

I may try the newer version of Patagonia's briefs that supposedly have an odor treatment; I'll also try to nix the baby wipes (they are unscented, but I can absolutely see how that could contribute to a nether regions funk)…and maybe a bit of commando in there when it's safe to do so :)

I'm kind of embarrassed to say this (yes, even after this and the pee rag threads), but I had been washing my undies and socks together in the same Unscented-Bronners-filled ziploc Maybe that had something to do with the gradually increasing funk in my trunk…..

Sorry if that was TMI…but this stuff is important!!!!!

I've found that mixing a little Borax powder into the rinse, also helps, albeit pretty temporarily. But you would want to test it first to see how your skin reacts. We use plenty of it in our hot tub as well (came with the house btw), and hasn't bothered anyone so far.

Polygiene treatment is probably much better. Haven't done any longer trips with same, but so far, so good. Wouldn't mix the two either–i save the borax treatment for non treated synthetics.

Nylon with polygiene should be really awesome. I would love to have say the Ex Officio boxers with polygiene instead of microban or whatever they use. It's definitely easier to wash out the gunk from in between the fibers from nylon than polyester because it's less extremely hydrophobic, but if it's thin enough will still dry quite fast.

But seriously, linen is quite nice too and very breathable and absorbent, but kind of like wool in that it tends to feel dryer than it really is (different mechanism though, with linen it's the hollow tubular fibers that suck moisture in and transport to the outside). Definitely significantly better than cotton in that regard, but is a very cool fabric, so not the best for more extremely cold temps.

I wear mens boxers for night-time and cool weather hiking – Ex Officio or something similar and cheap from Target. Weird, but the mens fit me much better than any women's boxer's I've tried because the legs are a little loose and doesn't creep like all the women's boxers I've tried. Give em a try if you haven't already.

Commando still works for me and I much prefer it when temps are over about 55 or 60 – less sweat and easier to keep clean.

I found that frequent and judicious employment of Kegel exercises really improved the sneeze issue for me. Beats carrying panty liners.

"I found that frequent and judicious employment of Kegel exercises really improved the sneeze issue for me. Beats carrying panty liners."

Ahem..cough..cough (channeling Justina now), Justina replies, "Girlfriend, that is what i'm talking about! Plus, makes our men happy, if a bit weirded out at times, too."

Boy has this been educational! I don't know what planet I've been on, but this is the first I've heard of the, um, "sneezing" issue…. You'd think in 55 years I would have noticed such a thing….

PostedFeb 5, 2014 at 1:03 am

Well, you aren't alone on your planet. I am approaching 60 and have never experienced anything like that either.

PostedFeb 5, 2014 at 6:57 am

Well I am certainly envious…..I wish I didn't have a "sneezing" issue either. And I TEACH pelvic floor strengthening exercises!!!

Mine is odd in that I only have the problem during long term exercise (running > 10 miles, long hikes, etc).

I like the men's boxer idea!!
