I'm specifically talking longer hikes…more than a week.

What kind of panties do you wear? Synthetic? Wool? I had always used Patagonia's synthetics on my hikes (<1 week); I bring 2 pair…one for wearing, the other washed and drying. I use baby wipes for a morning "bath"

But wow did I have a moisture/funk management problem during my JMT thru!! I was offending myself, and when that happens you know it's bad. It made sense…once a synthetic shirt gets a funk to it you can wash it all you want, but as soon as it gets a bit wet blimey it stinks! Why would underwear be any different??

Anyway, I'm going to do some sort of long trail again this summer and I must rethink my BASE layer before the trip. Before I go and fork over $20/pair on another experiment…any thoughts from the girls here??

And no Doug, you can't participate.

Oh dear, and I was going to try Patagonia synthetic panties. I've always taken regular cotton panties on hikes. But after witnessing how quickly my Patagonia capilene long johns dried, how warm they kept me (even cap 1 on a winter morning), and how little they smelled, I was going to try them their more intimate undies. But now you tell me they smell after all!
I don't know a solution. Cotton panties aren't warm, and they stay wet if you leak. I can't recommend them. Since there's merino everything nowadays, I suppose there are merino panties?

“And no Doug, you can’t participate.”

That’s just discrimination, pure and simple….

So I won’t bother letting you know about Rohan undies, the most comfortable briefs in the world. You’ll have to figure that one out on your own. So there.

I have Patagonia 'Barely' panties as well as the 'Active' ones and I personally think the 'Barely' ones are more comfortable and less prone to smell. But I have to admit that I've never noticed either one smelling after rinsing it out.

I also have a few pairs of Smartwool merino ones. I got them about a year ago at SierraTradingPost.com for $12-13 each. They're not as stretchy as the Patagonias; I sized up and am glad that I did. They're holding up well. They've probably been washed once a week for 10 months, regular cycle with all my stuff, dryer too. They're a very fine merino, dries fast, more comfortable when wet than the synthetics. The bikini weighs 23g (as does my Patagonia Barely bikini.)

I used Icebreakers for the JMT. Same thing, wore one and carried one and alternated/washed one each night. I'd use them daily at home, if not for the price. But they work great for backpacking, no odors, no issues.

I was thinking I'd try the merino. I was originally so impressed with Patagonia's barely bikini…used them for backpacking only and I really liked them. But about 10 days into the trip I started having some…um…sneezing issues (wink, wink…) and then it became a major daily battle to keep from stinking up the entire Sierra.

So I'll try some merino on a few trips and see what happens….

And Doug…you couldn't resist any subject line that had "panties" in it, could you?

I'll be watching this thread, as it's a major concern of Mrs. pitsy when I mention longer hiking/camping trips. She'll need them to be available in big-booty sizes, and want them to be sexy, too.

"And Doug…you couldn't resist any subject line that had "panties" in it, could you?"

And neither can the other thousand or so of us who are just lurking…

Made a pair of linen panties for Becky, she says she likes them. I also really like my linen boxers. Similar odor control as merino, but doesn't stretch, more durable, and dries faster.

Did the synthetic you used have polygiene treatment?

If it helps to think of me as Justina, go ahead ;) (One of my friends who is gay, had a penchant for calling me Justina, so i'm used to it).

I only use cotton. I am spoiled and use compostable baby wipes and that seems to work just fine.

Of coucrse, the men have to voice their opinions about women's undies! Aside from that, I disagree with cotton panties when hiking. At home, I'm organically oriented, but I find sweaty, peed-on cotton panties eminently uncomfortable when I'm out there with a minimum of equipment. I've already mentioned earlier in this thread that I only have cotton undies, but I'm looking for alternatives. I've traveled for decades with cotton panties, and there are now (and have been for quite a while) other, better possibilities. I want to try them out, and this thread couldn't have come at a better time.

I find that I stay much cleaner in the backcountry if I remove my cotton panties before peeing….. And I only travel with a minimum of equipment that's, uh, organically attached. :-)

Ex-Officio fan here. I bought some for a trip in 2009 and liked them so much I ditched the cotton I used to wear at home. In fact, the original three I bought in 2009 are still in good shape! Check out campmor.com for a better price.

In fact, I usually take only 1 pair for a trip. If they need washing, they dry so fast that I just put them back on damp and let my body heat dry them, which takes maybe 30 minutes.

Panti liners can be of help.

" I find sweaty peed on panties…."
I don't have a sweaty groin and I don't get pee on my panties.

My wife will only take synthetic ones. Fast drying is a key feature.
Very thin waist band and 'seamless' sides are also requirements – bcause of pack hip belt.

Cheers

Another fan of ExOfficio – one pair's enough. If it's warm enough to get sweaty and stinky, then it's warm enough to dry washed out undies in the afternoon. Easy enough to "go commando" while they dry! TMI??

Try having Cedar allergies in central Texas, you'll sneeze so much pee will be shooting out of every orifice not blocked by snot. No panty is safe! Might have to move the family somewhere without Cedar.

""… I don't get pee on my panties"

Give yourself a few years Kat. And you will ;)"

That Depends :)

I use Ex Officio too, but would NOT count on them for stink control. I’d use merino, but the only ones I have seen so far do not come large enough–XL is not size 14-16!

Here is a blog from 3 women that hiked the length of South America. I believe they used wool. The gear tab is at the top:

I'll second this; only synthetic (nylon/elastane), with thin or 'seamless' sides and waistband. They dry fast. Can wash and put them on wet and they dry with body heat.

Also, instead of using baby wipes, wash with water. I found the baby wipes leave a residue that smelled or made any smell worse.
