Roger is able to ship about 8 Caffin stoves in a 1Kg box for the SF Bay Area GGG Jan. 26 to save a lot on shipping, along with a further $5 discount per stove. Even if you live outside the Bay Area, I’m happy to ship your stove to you.

Standard price is $125 + $25 individual shipping. For this group buy, Roger is providing them for $120, and if there are 8 buyers, shipping to the SF Bay Area is only $4 each. If you are coming to the GGG I’ll bring them there, and if you live outside the area I can ship your stove to you for domestic shipping (probably less than $5). So even if you can’t be at the GGG you could save $20.

He recommends ordering by Jan. 8 to get them in time for the GGG. If anyone is interested, please PM me. You would paypal Roger directly and paypal shipping to me.

These are the latest stoves and have the upgraded tripod legs Roger has mentioned.

There are already two buyers so the shipping is now only $16 instead of $25 and there’s an additional $5 discount for GGG attendees, for a $14 total discount. With another two buyers shipping will drop to only $8 each for a $22 total discount and so on. With 8 buyers, it’s a $26 total discount.

Edit: URLs fixed up.
Edit: 4 buyers now
Cheers

From Roger: “Ah well. I have some uncommitted stoves at present. I was expecting them to last a while … Maybe not.

The closing date for final Paypal to me by 8-Jan. Sounds early, but the speed of the Post is a bit variable. Be painful if they turned up a day late! But you need to get in early so I can sort out the postage details. Postage would be to EJ, who would then take them to the GGG.

The stove (any version) costs $140, but if you are a member of BPL the cost is reduced to $125. For the GGG I will drop to $120 per stove, plus Paypal fee of about $5.40, plus postage.

Post and packing for a 1 kg box sent by Registered Post to USA will cost about $32. This has to be divided up among the buyers. The box and packing weigh 200 – 250 g, leaving 750 g for the stoves. A stove weighs ~85 g, so IN THEORY I can get 8 stoves in one box. I would have to use a larger box than normal in order to have enough room for enough bubble wrap, but I have allowed for that. Assuming there are 8 orders, that makes P&P of $4 per stove. Let's run with that for now.

Once we get over 1 kg the P&P jumps to about $55. That gets more expensive, and I don't have too many more than 8 stoves ready right now anyhow.

All stoves are tested in three ways before shipping. They are pressure tested (underwater) for leaks with the stove control valve turned off. They are tested for gas flow to make sure the jet and valve are not blocked. Finally, they are 'burn-tested' to make sure they work how they should. This last test means the burner will not look 'new', as it has had a flame on it.

Regardless of all of that, if you have any problems in this beta-test phase, please contact me. First of all, I WANT to know what problems are found: that's what a beta test is about. A couple of small items have been reported and fixed already – mainly individual problems generally confined to one stove. Anyhow, any faults found WILL be identified and fixed.

So, if you want a beta-test stove at the GGG discount, contact me FAST via roger@backpackinglight.com .

Cheers”

Will confirm with Roger, but looks like there may be only 2 stoves left in this GGG batch.

So far 6 are claimed and only 2 stoves remain for this group ship (only 8 stoves can fit in the 1 Kg box). Please contact Roger to paypal him $120 + $5.40 in Paypal fees for the stove; please hold off on paypaling shipping to me until the total per person is known.

EJ. I'll gladly haul in those stoves to camp at the GGG if needed. Just give me your ETA.

Eight stoves (all that would fit in the box weight-wise) were packed up and posted to EJ as promised. They arrived in time to go to the GGG.

I would have expected that everyone would have got their stove at the GGG meet. That was the deal. If you were not there you will have to contact EJ and arrange shipping, as that is outside the deal.

Cheers

Hi Josh,

Most of us "gear geeks" know how hard it can be to wait for a new piece of gear. EJ was until yesterday at GGG (Gathering of the Gear Geeks) and handed out the new stoves. I thought it was great of him to organize the group-buy and bring them to the meeting. Too bad you couldn't be there too — it was a fantastic event and you might have enjoyed the stove demonstrations by Hiking Jim or conversations with any of the 100+ particpants.

I still have to unpack some of the gear I brought to GGG so others could see it, test it and ask any questions. I also have to ship one item to a fellow BPLer and hope I will make it to the post office in the next two days to ship it to him.

Although it might take a little bit of patience I'm sure you will receive your stove.

To show you how far my trust in EJ's integrity goes, I will refund you your total of $130 for stove, paypal fees and postage, if you don't receive the stove within the next 10 days. That way you will not be "burned" under any circumstances. All you have to do, is to let me know your paypal address and you will be even.

Best Regards,

Manfred

"Although I have never met EJ, he must be a good person for you to offer up that type of guarantee."

EJ's a great person, and totally trustworthy, as Manfred has said. Remember, he just got the stoves in time for the GGG, which just ended yesterday. He also had company from out of town (out of country, actually), so he's been a tad busy.

I really appreciate the emails Caffin has sent out concerning the stove.

If EJ was still at the GGG, I'm guessing he hasn't been able to send them yet and hopefully we'll receive this week or the next.

I was looking forward to using them last weekend, but made do with a snowpeak.

Oh, the suffering…

(Sorry, couldn't resist!)

Josh–I'm sorry, but your impatience is simply unsubstantiated. Even a cursory glance at EJ's forum profile shows that he's been a longstanding member of BPL who is interested far more in the forum community than in Gear Swap, stove acquisition, or anything else. Sometimes it pays to be patient.

All of us here lead lives outside of backpacking, and that more than occasionally means that we aren't always able to be as prompt or available as we'd like. Remember, he is a person with work and responsibilities like the rest of us–not a vendor whose sole job it so make amazing UL gear and respond to customer inquiries (as if that weren't more than enough already).

You have nothing to worry about EJ's character, and there's more than enough evidence to prove that. Personally, I and many other members here can vouch for him. Your stove will arrive soon enough.

Josh, I heard from E.J., and the stoves shipped Saturday. You will get yours soon.

E.J. came through–as usual. Your worries are (and were) unfounded.

Please see my initial comments on the matter.

I will only add that everything has proceeded per the schedule that E. J. detailed above. Your stove shipped less than a week after the GGG ended. Assuming that you did not pay E. J. for his time to package and post it, that seems quite reasonable–especially given your overall savings.

You just bought something off someone you don't know (not a listed company) on the internet. You took that risk yourself. Heaps of people gave you quick, very reasonable answers as to why you hadn't got your stove yet, but you keep trashing them and the delivery guy who was vouched for several times.

You probably should have just said "no worries", and waited after the first post.

Hilarious.
