850-900 fill Duck Down.

ZenBivy is promoting 900 fill duck down from Muscovy ducks that’s cleaned with ultrasound to produce 900 fill. EE uses  850 fill duck down. A good deal cheaper. What’s the current opinion?

I haven’t used it, but who cares which bird made the down?

Fill power and percentage of down vs feathers tells most of the story. The part that isn’t told is longevity and performance when slightly damp — and we never know much about that regardless of the bird.

Mostly it sounds like yet another good idea from the inventor of the Hubba Hubba and other cool designs.

(I’m slightly amused by the gold-plated down recently promoted by Outdoor Vitals. I’m waiting to see test reports or anecdotes about its long term and wet weather performance. It would be humorous if it actually works.)

While all down can have a smell now and then, it seems like duck down odors can be more pungent, from Katabatic:

One additional consideration for some with an especially sensitive sense of smell might be to weigh goose vs duck, as the duck can sometimes have a more potent scent.

The Muscovy down is said to have no detectable odors and to be compatible to elder down.

Muscovy Down
Our Muscovy Down comes from ducks living wild and free in Siberia. It is processed in Germany to our exacting standards to be incorporated in our manufacturing process at our plant in Delta, BC. It is an excellent down, representing the best available in the world from birds living in an essentially free environment. With its high fill power and traits similar to eiderdown (large down clusters and no detectable scent), Muscovy Down is preferred for bedding products of discerning consumers in Moscow. Our Muscovy Down goes through specialized NF5 cleaning and conditioning process, making it hypoallergenic.

There is a reason why duck down only cost 55% to 65% as much as high fill goose down…it’s not as good!

Beware of marketing spin. Duck down degrades over time more than quality goose down. You won’t see Western Mountaineering, Katabatic or Nunatak using duck down anytime soon.

Not buying into marketing hype though it’s the only information handedly available. EE made the switch a few years ago. They no longer offer lower power goose down. A Muscovy is a little different then a regular duck. Its somewhat closer to a goose. They can mate with ducks, but it produces mule ducks. Otherwise they’re not really a full pledged duck. They walk funny and make funny noises. I’m curious if equating  it to duck down might be a mistake.

This thread is going in an interesting direction! Like many things in Russia, you can’t always believe what you see and hear.  :-)

I am now thinking that if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it may NOT be a duck!

The offspring of a Muscovy duck and a duck is sterile.

Unlike a duck, they have red caruncles on their faces. They kind of do an Egyptian shuffle rather than waddle. They make a noise. Like theyre talking to themselves. Much quieter than a duck and they don’t quack.

Assuming you meant “Eider” down? I can’t watch Dan Becker… basically a newb with a youtube.

I was only aware of mule horse/donkeys.  Interesting that ducks also do this.

Western Mountaineering and Nunatak anyway. Katabatic offers 850 duck down.

Interesting stuff.  I recently bought a dual down duvet for home use; mine was duck down and was a little over $200 each.  I saw one that was made of Eider Down and it was over $3000 for the same size.

Jon, I’m only familiar with eiderdown in relation to Iceland. My understanding of the high cost involves fairies going out at night to gather it from the nests or something along those lines. They don’t work cheap.

Not to be confused with elder down, which is collected by the grandkids.

“Katabatic offers 850 duck down”

Is there nothing sacred? Regardless the 850 duck down option does lower the price $80 on Alsek 22 and $50 on Palisade. I get why Katabatic and EE offer a budget option, 850 plus goose down certainly isn’t cheap, For those who only backpack once in awhile duck down is probably just fine.

I made a Revelation copy awhile back with 11 oz 800 duck down from Dutchware. Been using it in temps above 42*F. Getting ready to head out this weekend with it. Shell is .67 Argon. Unlike EE went I with horizontal down chambers and 1″ baffles, but the continuous chambers allow down to move around too much, as can be seen in pic below…down is more shifted to the right side in top chambers. Cost to build was around $140. Hyperdry 800 duck down is only $25 per 3 oz bag at Dutchware.
