I lived in calgary for a winter and ice climbed around canmore as well years back
1. All those albertans that claim they know how to drive in winter? …. Bullshiet .. They what we would call a thin lauer of white fluff and they are skidding as bad as vancouver folks ….
2. Winters in cowtown are a bit overated most of the time… the humidity on a really cold day in the PNW makes day FEEL colder … Calgary is dry cold … My partners from the rockies say the same
3. That said there are days in the land of the mooooo that are effing cold … For example this past week there say daytime temps in the -20c range and nightine temps below -30c …
4. Alberta can be effing windy … Past the rockies its basically a flat plain … Environment canada tonight is warning of -40c with windchill, and that youll het frosbite in 10 min of exposed skin

5. When i lived there i got a big effing puffy … It wasnt the best down in the world, but it was BIG … And that was in the city …. If ur in the wild in the winter for days away from civilization get the biggest poofiest dead goose parka u can
6. For ice climbing trips where the temps fell to -30c daytime you could get away with a 8-10 oz down fill puffy with and a good synth/fleece layer … Or multiple lighter synth/down puffies … However you had to keep moving or do the belay dance to keep from becoming a human popsicle …just as important were a good pair of belay mitts … If u were to hang out around camp u might want more
7. I wouldnt worry about it till i get there …. Once you do make a bee line for the downtown mec or buy from liveoutthere.com which is calgary based …. You can also find dead bird on that site for 40-50% off .. Dead bird r always on sale in canada
8. If you do want to get a poofay before hand for the calgary cold snap get something with 10+ oz of 700 or higher fill down
9. Praise the lord every -30c night that u arent in edmonton

Few places on the planet matched Alberta’s Arctic-like weather Friday. Irkutsk — a frosty Russian city — was a comfortable -6 degrees and even Iqaluit residents enjoyed a comparatively enviable -15 degrees.
Haligonians had it the best in Canada, with temperatures in Halifax some 35 degrees warmer than Calgary.Â
The weather prompted the Calgary Zoo to cancel its Friday night edition of Zoolights due to “extreme cold.” Canada Olympic Park remained closed, but is expected to reopen at noon Saturday.
Across the city, 25 people have been treated for frostbite and hypothermia since Monday’s snowstorm, according to EMS spokesman Adam Loria.
“Within minutes, any exposed skin can start having the effects of frostbite,” said Loria, “Cover as much skin as possible and dress in layers.”
