Hats for big heads?

I am looking for a hat. Merino wool, midweight or lightweight, just a beanie. Ultralight and simple.

However, my head is not a "One Size Fits All" head. It looks alright to me, but every hat I get is ear-crushingly tight… Who knew I was thick-skulled?

Anyone know of a merino baselayer hat that comes in a "Large" size? Or know of a one-size that fits big heads?

As much as I admire Kat's hats (and forum contributions!) it's not exactly what I had in mind. Those hats look great but they're thicker than what I'm looking for. Here's a picture of what weight I'm interested in:

Ask her if she can accommodate your request and make one thinner. Have you seen one in person?

Just the photos on her site. I'll ask, but it looks like hers are hand-knit and the one I'm looking for is machined. There are no gaps in the construction. I am sure to a lot of people, a hat is a hat, but I'm looking specifically for a baselayer-type construction for my dome.

I forgot Kat was making hats and I'll probably get one for this winter because they're so highly regarded around here, but I have more than one hat in my arsenal and I'm looking for one specifically like this, not a hand-knit wool hat.

I am not sure what you consider a big head. I wear hat size 7 3/4.

I was looking for a wool beanie that had about the same thickness as a mid layer base.

I came up with Arcteryx.

>>>Rho LTW Beanie

The long @ 42 grams stretches over my ears. The regular less so.

Not cheap but I bought them from Mountain Gear on sale. But beware, if you get on Mtn Gear's mailing list, you will get mail 2 or 3 times a week.

Assuming you want something that will fit under a bike helmet, I would take a look at the Smartwool beanies. A hand made one by Kat would add much caché to your wanderings :)

Smartwool ones are perfect design-wise, but too small!

And it'll see some helmet use, but more use when running.

The Arcteryx one is also spot-on design wise, but I want to wait and see if anyone has any other bighead-specific suggestions before I order one. I don't know my head measurement, but my bicycle helmets are "Large" and not "X-Large" so I'm not an extreme case. Just the upper end of the spectrum.

The dead bird Rho beanies fit under a climbing helmet.

I also found the SmartWool beanies not stretchy enough.

You double it over to wear as a beanie, but I wear a merino buff all winter. Fits my 7 3/8 head without being snug. I run, don't ride but I know it fits under my ski helmet, and I can turn it in to a balaclava if necessary.

Don't have a specific recommendation, but more a general one. Have a couple of about half wool, half acrylic hats, and like the combination of decent drying time, warmth, feel, decent durability (relatively speaking), inexpensive, and decent odor prevention. The ones i got i got from STP. If you happen to do a search there, just read the reviews to see the sizing.

I have a disproportionately large head for my height (and relatively large in general), and so it's been a factor for me too.

I was torn between necro’ing this old thread and starting a new one.  I’m hoping for a 2016 perspective from the big-head crowd for lighter merino hats that fit those of us with bit melon heads.

Since I’ve lost my Outdoor Research Micro Gauge beanie (which rode up on my head sadly), I’m torn between buying a merino buff and looking for a beanie style replacement.

Looking for both a thin merino and a thick windproof merino/fleece beanie for really big heads.
Thanks ya’ll!

Merino Buff. Nothing could fit a big head better! And it is versatile.
