I remember reading from the trail days 07 posts that Flyin Brian suggests with enough skill a bivy is not necessary when using a poncho tarp as shelter.
What do you guys think?
On a related note, if the above is accepted and one has the skill, given 5oz. for a typical SUL bivy, would it not be better to add 3.5oz. more insulation to your bag/quilt and put a good dwr on it? (3.5oz. because with no bivy you have to use a ground sheet @ 1.5oz. for a size M GG polycro trimmed a bit). End result is same weight with more warmth.
