i just picked up a Dana pack in new condition for winter trips. It has been stored in the garage of a house on the pacific coast. It's like new except for a funky smell.

Any ideas on how to remove the smell? It is currently sitting in the bottom of my chlorinated swimming pool, where it will spend the day, and will be line dried after that. What else can I do?

Get it out of the pool. You will delaminate it if you haven't already. Don't forget to rinse. Did the material feel sticky at all inside?

Give MiraZyme™ Odor Eliminator a try. It is a powerful blend of natural enzymes and microbes to remove odors caused by algae, bacteria, mold and more. McNett has identified, separated and reproduced a unique blend of 10 naturally occurring and highly adapted enzymes, microbes and other organic ingredients designed to identify and destroy odor.

Edit: lifted from a thread on the same subject years ago. second time posting it today.

+1 mirazyme.

If you can, let the musty object dry completely in full sun. The sun is an expert at killing molds, mildews, etc.

Also store it in the driest most well ventilated area you can find.
Use a fan if that helps.

Occasionally washing it in gentle detergent and then back to the dry well ventilated area for a few days.

Do this as well as the other suggestions.

i'm not sure what a pool is good for besides washing gear and checking t rests for leaks. It is nice for catching leaves and sucking up money though.

Ken, wasn't able to get back home for about 6 hours, has n0 visible damage, won't know if smell is gone until it dry's thoroughly. Ordered the McNett product from Amazon, thanks for the advice.
