Bear bag hanging on tree trunks (not branches)

Ursack. Designed just for that.

I use the sack or a canister all the time now since having to cut my food down 20' above me due to a bad hang. Always a pain.

The Ursack is the only thing I know of that can be tied to a tree trunk. Since bears can climb the trunk the sack and cord have to be strong enough to prevent the bear from ripping it off the tree using its weight and gravity. any regular sack would likely be torn by the bear with little effort.

Another possibility is to string a cord between two trees and then hange the food from the cord. However in california bears have been known to climb a tree and then use their weight to snap the line sending the food to the ground.

Note I always use a bear canister since bear bagging is not allowed or strongly discouraged in the parks I frequent.

That would well with Grizzlies if you get it 15+ feet up. But for those blackies you have down there – I've seen a lot of them climb limbless trees.

Yeah, use a canister if required or a cocky attitude if not.

The only perfect bear-hanging branch is in the brochure the park hands out.
