I have read several other threads, and not quite found the opinions/answers I’m looking for, hence this thread.
I’ve never owned a synthetic quilt of any type. In the past, for summer use I’ve experimented with sheets, fleece blankets, those overhyped sleeping bag liners from MSR that supposedly boost your bag’s rating by 10 degrees, and cheap 40-50 degree down bags from Wal-Mart, or the like. Some of them worked on specific trips; however, most of those options proved insufficient or too heavy in one way or another.
This summer, I’m experimenting with an increasingly minimalist approach with a BPW between 4-6 pounds. I live in the Santa Cruz Mts in the redwoods. During the summer, it is warm, usually between 75-95 degrees, with overnight lows around 50. Humidity isn’t that bad. Bugs are a problem. The landscape is rugged and you must deal with constant micro-climates.
I’m also using a bivy for the first time because I want to cowboy camp, or stealth camp as much as possible.
Gear:
Sleep system: Borah bivy, long/wide, silnylon bottom, M90 upper, side zip (7.3 ounces). SMD Gatewood Cape for tarp, rain jacket, and pack cover all in one (11.96 ounces). I’m still contemplating whether or not to bring a custom cut polycro groundsheet (1.2 ounces). CCF pad cut in half that doubles as pack frame (6.69 ounces). My backpack makes up the lower half of my sleeping pad.
Insulation: On summer trips, I still carry my Stoic Hadron Anorak (8.38 ounces), Montbell Dynamo wind pants (2.72 ounces), Patagonia Houdini (4 ounces), and MLD Event rain mitts (1.49 ounces).
Clothing worn: Icebreaker Tech T merino shirt, GoLite Mesa Running shorts w/liner, GoLite racing hat, Smartwool Ultra Light mini socks, and trail running shoes.
I'm curious if this might be my system for a planned thru-hike of the AT: use a synthetic quilt for warmer, more humid sections of the hike, and use my EE down quilt for colder, drier sections.
I want to keep my purchase under 200$ and keep the weight around 16 ounces, if possible. Lighter is better. I’ve been looking at the MLD Spirit quilts, either the 38 or 48 degree version, and the Prodigy from Enlightened Equipment, either the 40 or 50. Both use Climashield Apex for insulation. I own a Revelation 20 from EE and it’s an awesome piece of gear. I’ve also owned several products from MLD – all top notch quality.
Basically, I’m open to suggestions of all types of sleeping gear based on your experiences. Light is great and cheap is awesome too!
Thanks for reading and I appreciate any feedback!
