I got a 6-digit number in 1972, lost it during a move, got a new 6-digit number around 1980 (7nnnnn). Found the old number several years later, but REI had purged it, so I couldn't use it.
Never realized that low REI numbers would become a kind of merit badge!

Nick is so old that his REI number has six digits, but that is in Roman Numerals.

Hah! Five digit REI member here – from about 1963 or so. I still have the first item purchased – a Primus stove. I think it was listed at $8.95
