you could add some ultralight material for a bottom and probably be right around 1 lb.

I would agree that the SMD wild oasis would be a good place to start, and would add the Gossamer Gear Spinnshelter.
The GG website has directions to make a spinnshelter bathtub floor, which would get you part-way there.

I thought shelters had to have floors at Philmont?

We saw non floored traditional tents last year @ Philmont, there were also a fair number of ants and other critters that could easily sneak into a non-floored shelter. I'll look at the Wild Oasis, and would consider bonding / sewing a floor to it, but would still like to see a Cuben tarp with a 'net tent'.

Should I keep dreaming & hope for that GG 11 0z Cuben ;) or ???

The reason for banning tarps as sleeping shelters, as I understand it, is that tarps are used as dining flies in each campsite's designated food-handling area. The staff believes that bears might associate a tarp with food; thus, they've decided that no one should sleep under something that looks like a dining fly.

My son is going next year. I'm considering getting a Squall 2 for him to take. The Mega Light reviewed recently looks to be even a better deal if bugs are tolerable, but in rattler country I'd feel better with a floor.

I'm pretty sure that Philmont does not allow solo sleeping. An odd number of youth or adults would mean using a 3 person shelter. At least that is the operating assumption of our 2007 crews, two of which have advisors that have been there more than once already.

I'm also pretty sure they do NOT require integrated floors but according to friend's son who rangered there for 3 years you will have trouble finding tent sites that are not hard packed and rainwater pooling is very possible so a bathtub floor might be wise.

Another reply mentioned Philmont fearing that bears might associate tarps with food. That echos the response I received when I contacted Philmont a year ago asking about using tarps.

All things considered, I'm going with what I know …. TarpTent products. A Squall 2 or Cloudburst 2 would work great, especially for two typically sized scouts. My tentmate is new to UL shelters so we're going luxurious in a Rainshadow 2 with a bathtub floor. After seam sealing and adding side guys/stakes it comes in at 21oz per person.

Mike, ditto. I'm looking for the same. We'll also be at Philmont July '08.

Last year, our troop had a crew of 10 with 3 adults. 2 of the adults each had their own TT Squall 2. The third adult shared a tent with his son. The feedback was positive on the Squall 2s — much better weight than previous shelters, solid design, and a good floor.

I have a Squall. But if there were a reasonably priced 1 pound option for a solo, floored shelter, I'd probably pounce on it.

Here's a Tarp Tent Squall 2 at a typical Philmont campsite.

I made a tarptent from henry's original plan's. It is essentailly a tarp with some netting. If a floor is required, I attach tyvek to the bottom. It does weigh 18 ounces, though I think you could trim some of that weight in the beak.
