    Hi,
I am very new to DIY equipment and i am starting out with quilt. i found a great design to follow on the net the only issue is the down.
i found a UK based site (i'm from the UK) they sell 100% down when i asked there fill power they said this

"Hi the fill power of the 100% Duck Down is +70. Thanks"

Does that mean it is rubbish and can not be used for a quilt.

    Thanks for any help :)

The only thing I can think is that you're dealing with a different set of units.

However, it still looks like it's got to be really bad down. Wikipedia says that a fill of 175 cm^3/g is equivalent to 300 in^3/oz.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fill_power

If the 70+ down is indeed in cm^3/g, then that equates to a 120 fill down in the units we're used to.

This still makes no sense, but I can't find any other units that might work (without going into decimeters).

    Ask them.

I would suspect that they failed to type a second '0'; i.e. my guess is that the FP is 700 or more.

Don't ask us what we think; if their spec isn't clear, ask them to clarify; after all, you'll be buying from them, not us…

I think you can get 900 fill from thru-hiker.com for $30 per 3 ounces. I assume he'll ship to U.K.

Maybe it's worth paying a little extra to get good stuff if you're taking the time to do it.

Or http://wildernesslogics.com/main.sc 850 fill down for $6.75 per ounce. I have a suspicion that they rate using American standard where thru-hiker uses European standard. If that's true, this would be maybe 775 fill using European standard.

Or http://www.backwoodsdaydreamer.com/ but they're out currently

    Alex,

Extremtextil (based in Germany so no import duty problems) sell 700 and 860 fill-power down.

Thanks for all the help guys. the duck down guy didn't know anymore about it than what he said so the search continues. getting down from abroad is one option but it ends up being very expensive so i may have to leave the quilt on the drawing board and start on another project…making a hammock :)
