How many of you started with a pump water filter, then tried alternative water treatment methods but have gone back to using pump filters? What are your reasons?

I started with a pump, then chemicals. Steripen next with other chemicals being tried during this period also. i do not see myself going back to a pump. Though the inline filter offerings from Sawyer do intrigue me. Luckily where I hike these days water quality is superb. So silt is not a factor. If it was I would certainly use some form of filtration.

Pump for minimal flow acquisitions – canyons, dry high alpine. You can literally suck a small divot dry, wait for more, and repeat. Filling a Platy or bottle for tablets, SeriPen, or a gravity would take all day, if it was possible at all. But take a spare cartridge as I have had micro silt kill a Hiker in less than 50 liters.

Gravity/Squeeze for BWCA and big flows. The invisible red algae can kill a Hiker in a short amount of use. Back flushing a Sawyer addresses this.

My Steripen Adventurer (for bike bottle) and Katadyn chlorine dioxide tabs (for hydration bladder) are all I need.
