I have wrapped tape around a pill bottle and then used the bottle for storage. Great for a mini repair kit with sewing supplies, super glue, safety pins, etc.

i just spent the better part of an hour removing the dried out 5 foot piece of duct tape i had wrapped around my hiking pole. well, part of it was dried out and part of it was welded together; it would never had been of use in the woods.

i have now replaced it with a nice 5 foot length of tyvek tape and hope to never NEED it ;)

Everyone has a business card lying around the house that they either don't want or need anymore and just haven't gotten around to throwing it away.

I carry my duct tape in a flat "roll" with a portion of one of those business cards used in the center like the cardboard tube in the center of a roll of paper towels.

In my variation I've cut a piece of a business card out of the full size card that is the width of the tape and maybe 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" in length. I wrap the duct tape around this "starting point" being careful to keep the edges aligned with the card and the edges of the tape. How much you carry depends on what you use or think you will need.

In my case it winds up as a flat "roll" about 1/2" thick and 2" square. It gets put into my FA kit where it usually resides throughout my entire hike. I've only used duct tape 1 time to care for a blister. I did use it once to seal up a box that I mailed home with excess food and gear. :-)

Party On,

Decades of hiking I have never used more than a small piece of first aid tape.

How much weight does the tape add to your poles?

Leave the duct tape. Try it, you might like it.

I horde backing paper off of any RA stickers I receive with an online order, or any large size labels (USPS, UPS.) This works perfect for keeping small pieces handy that neatly travel in my FAK/gear repair bag. Same drill with leukotape. I find it easier to trim and shape while on the backing paper.
