Hey,

I'm looking at purchasing a two person ultralight tent with the following characteristics (in order of preference):

1. Weighs around 3 lbs (or less)
2. Two doors and two vestibules
3. Suitable for tall people
4. A head height of at least 40"
5. Ability to sleep head-to-toe

I mainly backpack with friends and like the idea of separate doors and the privacy/comfort of being able to sleep head-to-toe. The lightweight aspect is primarily I'd rather carry less and additionally if it were light enough it could be a viable option for solo trips as opposed to buying a separate one person tent (I may have to rethink this).

Here are a few options I'm currently considering:

1. MSR Carbon Reflect 2 (http://cascadedesigns.com/msr/tents/experience-series/carbon-reflex-2/product)
2. Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 (https://www.bigagnes.com/Products/Detail/Tent/copperspurul22012)
3. Nemo Obi Elite 2P (http://www.nemoequipment.com/nemo2012-obielite2p-tent)

Personally I like the look of the MSR tent the best, but the footprint seems too small. I'm 6'1" and read that I should be looking at tents which are at least 88" long. The Big Agnes has a tapered floor so I'm not sure if you can sleep head-to-toe. Finally the Nemo has no brow pole so the interior may be somewhat cramped as noted in the review by Backpacker magazine,

http://www.backpacker.com/gear-guide-2012-nemo-obi-elite-2p-tent/gear/16433

I know that I'm trying to ask for the best of everything, i.e., light weight but with two doors and a heap of space, but was wondering whether anyone had any thoughts about any of these tents or other tents which meet the criterion I'm looking for? I realize that Easton and Big Agnes make some superlight options with a single door, but those designs aren't that appealing to me.

Thanks

you might check out a couple of other tents that im sure will have plenty of room

in them and double doors/vestibules

first is the black diamond mesa this is a palace of a tent and is capable or riding out a storm its heavier than what your looking for but all other criteria
would be there i had one and loved it it has a 90 inch floor so long bags are not a problem and its plenty wide enough for two people i slept three in mine once and everyone managed to sleep well in it

next is the mountainsmith morrison
though not nearly as spendy as the mesa its a hell of a tent for the money
it also has a 90 inch floor and is wide enough for two with double doors and vestibules and aluminum poles i own one currently and have to say for the features it has and the price it is a definate bargain in the two person tent arena

just a suggestion if you can get past the extra weight

Hey,

Yeah I have hiking poles. I was considering the Nemo Meta 2P,

It's definitely large enough but I read mixed reviews regarding condensation issues.

Regarding where I plan on using it. I live in Northern California, so primarily the Sierra Nevada and costal regions. It's fairly dry in the Sierras during the Summer/Fall, although the coast gets socked in with fog.

I had the same criteria, and also looked at the Meta2. Decided on a Six Moon Designs "Lunar Duo" and I'm really glad I did. The "spreader" poles at the top make it feel huge inside, weight is dead on at 40 ounces. I was originally worried about weather-worthiness, but after 2 seasons in it I can vouch for it through cascade range thunderstorms. For reference, I'm 6'5".

+1 on the Six Moons Design Lunar Duo. At 6'4", I love mine. It is a palace for 40 oz, easy to set up and stable.

I would also suggest checking out the LightHeart Gear Duo. It is similar in design to the SMD Duo. I have a LHG Solong 6 as a solo tent and the craftsmanship and quality that Judy puts into her stuff is top notch. Her customer service is terrific as well. She spent good deal of time making sure all my questions were answered and that I had exactly what I needed.

Good luck on the search.

I have the Copper Spur UL2 and I'd say head to toe would be a no-go in it. It's heavier than your criteria too – mine is 3 lbs 7 oz with stuff sacks, stakes and guylines that were included. A couple ounces more with a few additional Ti shephard hooks and guylines.

We also use a Copper Spur UL2 and I think head-toe will not work. The foot foot of the tent is much more narrow than the head.

Hey,

Thanks for all the input. I'll definitely look into the Tarp Tent/Six Moon Designs options.
