I need some recommendations from people who successfully "sleep under the stars" on the East Coast.

In the mid-Atlantic area, humidity is generally around 80%, and night time temperatures drop below the dew point in the spring and fall (which is usually around 70 deg's F).

There is generally enough dew that even synthetic insulation starts to feel clammy at 2am, and chilly by 4am when cowboy camping. There is very little opportunity to dry a sleeping bag out during the day, due to the high daytime humidity and short lunch breaks. (I have a "regular nylon" sleeping bag shell, not a WP one).

I currently use a large tarp and ground sheet that covers most of the area under the tarp (since it's hard to find areas without a lot of vegetation). I'd like to cowboy camp when there is no rain expected.

Is a bivy sack with a breathable top likely to work ? Would using a larger ground cloth, and laying a layer over the top of the sleeping bag likely be better or worse than the bivy ?

Thanks.

A bivy will let you create a microclimate for yourself. I have found that a bivy does help keep me drier and warmer in humid/moist conditions. I do not use a ground sheet with mine. So no real hardship with the small increase in weight. Also provides insect protection. Mine has a Momentum top and silnylon bottom.

Sure I am on the extreme west coast. Conditions here are not so unlike New Jersey.

i think a mesh top bivy will definitely help. i know that when i sleep with my open top hammock (as often as i can w/o bugs destroying me) i often battle condensation on my top quilt, but when i sleep inside the blackbird my tq isn't nearly as "clammy" as you put it…

Yeah just get a bivvy with a DWR top and you'll be good. The DWR will be breathable enough for you, but will shed the dew fine.
