Exactly! I could have made this book into a full-time job: editing, layout, production, sales and marketing, etc. But I didn't want to do that — I have other projects I'm working on, including projects that will get me outside so I can develop more content like this!

When I started writing the manuscript (which became the "Pre-Edition"), I never expected that NG would eventually publish it. I thought maybe a Falcon-type publisher would be interested, but when NG said they wanted it, it was a no-brainer for me. "Yes, please publish my first book."

Wait so Paul you stop hiking in the winter? WTF man?

I'm still bummed that the nearest foot of snow pack is four hours away in the U.P. Oh well I'll be heading north this weekend to play in some shallow snow pack (4-9 inches).

    Oh no!

Andrew, you're reading all the internet flames sent your way

Don't do it, it'll just drive you crazy : )

And to the flamer that called Andrew the William Shatner of hiking books:

My favorite William Shatner role was when he was traveling in a commercial airplane in a terrible storm, and this devil creature was on the wing trying to throw stuff in the jet engine to make the plane crash.

Or was it just the Shatner character imagining it?

"Jerry, please go back on your meds"

Are you referring to my recommendation to Skurka to not read flames against him?

or did you not like that Shatner role?

I guess we need to remember that Andrew is "one of us." When I first looked at Ray Jardine's website a few years ago, and read most of the content, I thought the UL crowd was a bunch of fringe lunatics.

In some sense, we are. We don't conform to the "sit in your cubicle and get fat until you're too old to do anything, retire, and THEN travel the world, visiting tourist traps for fat people and call that a life." By the standards of most of the US at least, we ARE fringe lunatics… simply by virtue of doing something other than sit in front of a cubicle at work, and sit in front of a bozo-box at home.

    I'd rather be a lunatic.
