I decided to give Darn Tough's quarter mesh socks (68% Merino Wool, 28% Nylon, 4% Lycra Spandex) a try.

http://www.darntough.com/run-bike-1493.html

Before I had been purchasing/using the equivalent type of sock made by Patagonia (also a merino wool blend). I wasn't happy with the Patagonia sock because after only a few weeks of wear, the heel fabric (the part where my Achilles tendon is) would become threadbare (the ball of the foot area would do the same a few weeks after that). I've actually taken a few pairs back to the Patagonia shop, which they gracefully exchanged for me. But I cannot go on doing that for eternity. Hence my decision to explore other brands.

And now on to my question. Do Darn Tough socks stretch out over time/extended use? The reason I ask is that the pair I purchased was somewhat larger in size to the Patagonia ones I usually purchase. The Patagonia ones were pretty stretchy, so when you compare both brands of socks of the same size side-by-side the difference is fairly pronounced. The Darn Tough socks fit quite well at the moment, so I am wondering what the future holds.

Oh, and how are they on the heel/ball of the foot wear? So far, it's been a couple of weeks, and mine are doing great.

Thanks…

Edit: For those of you who having long-lived Darn Tough socks, could you please state the type/material composition of the sock you are using? Thx.

They are all I buy these days.
Not that I have to buy them very often.

Cheers

Love mine. Darn tough. No stretch that I have experienced in 2 years of usage.

All of mine are going strong. I wear a pretty large sock and still fit great. Had my Smartwools stretch and wear out where the Darn Tough has been great.

I bought my mother a pair of these as i was checking out at small local shoe store and noticed them. I never seem to see these sold in many stores local to me and i live just outside Boston.

I have a feeling though that they might be a great company to purchase stock in as i see them becoming the next SmartWool in the next number of years.

No i cant speak of how they wear bit just having them in my hand next to smart wool i can see and feel the quality.

Chris,

In my experience it depends on what Darn Tough socks you get, the Merino Crew cushioned hikers that I own have lasted 2 years so far and been used on several trips, they don't show any real significant wear, no loss in fit or durability, it's pretty amazing. I wear these socks almost daily for work, running, hiking, slippers, taking out the trash, etc…. The equivalent Smartwool pair I have has long since been retired to the reject bin.

The 1/4 Mesh merino sock from Darn Tough wore out on me in the achilles/heel region on the second trip I wore them on, but that involved low cut trailrunning shoe that wore the area down and stream crossings for 12+miles in silty water. I would buy the 1/4 mesh merino pair of socks again without hesitation.

There are other decent sock companies out there, but I haven't found any as good as Darn Tough with maybe the exception of Defeet Wooleators, those are a burly sock as well that wear slowly.

You will not go wrong with Darn Tough socks. I have several pair and overall have been pleased. My only issue has been that size L seems to be a little small and XL are too big. But, they hold up well. About 6 months ago I came across FITS socks. These socks have far exceeded my expectations. They are extremely comfortable and so far have held up very well. I have several hundred miles of hiking on them and there is no sign of wear. Also, the size L fits my size 12 feet better than the Darn Tough or Smartwool socks.

I found these about 6 months ago also, I find that they also fit my size 12 feet better than any others. I have been wearing them more and more and my smart wool less and less.

Love the Darn Tough here as well. The XL fits my 15s perfectly. Wear like iron.

The ones I was looking at had a lifetime guarantee, how can they do that? Pricey at the local small outdoor shop.

I no longer buy expensive socks. My local Marshalls has darn tough and ice breakers all the time. Just picked up two pairs of Darn Tough for $9 apiece. Ice brakers, which i like alot were $7. The only sock that I have worn for the past 4 years were the smart wools at $17 a piece and will no longer buy them at that price.

after trying dozens and dozens of different socks, I finally discovered Darn Tough about three years ago- their 1/4 full cushion sock is my backpacking and trail running sock- I have four pairs and they are in great shape despite lots of miles on them. Wash them in cold water and low drier heat- no stretching, no shrinking, no thinning

I wear boots everyday for work and ended getting five pair of their boot cushion socks (basically a taller sock than my hiking ones)- I expect these to last many, many years.

I do have a couple of pairs of their thin merino ones that I intended to layer under gore-tex socks, haven't had a chance to try these ones out yet though

I have one pair of darn tough that i have had for about a year (i think), they still look brand new. I wear them at least once a week. That said i do prefer smart wool as they are softer and they seem to last forever for me as well. I doubt the smartwool socks will outlast the darn tough though.
The I also have some patagonia wool socks, and they have been good as well with no stretch, in fact they are kinda tight to put on, then they loosen up after a few minutes.

I pretty much only wear the above socks these days, except for mowing the lawn i keep some ol' cotton hanes around for that.

I've been using Thor-Lo Hikers for several years and find them pretty durable and very comfortable.

They seem to wear out at the ball of my foot first but I've only gone through two pair in 10 years of day hikes, training hikes and backpacking.

The 1/4 cushion socks are bombproof for hiking. Sometimes I wish they were slightly less thick, though.

If you look on the Darn Tough website, now there is a separate category of 1/4 cushion socks for "hiking/cycling." Can anyone tell the difference between those ones and the "hiking" ones?

Kevlar socks or something as tough as my big toenail is like a knife, destroys my regular socks regularly . Would Darn Tough work?

Check Out TJ MAXX and Marshals for Darn Tough socks. they have them for around $9.00 there. My Wife and I love them.
