I dont really want one for navigating while hiking in the outback.

Just general direction finding.

Have about 3 already.

Darn things, almost every one I pick up in a store is bad.

Just looking for a watch.

When you say moderately priced – what is your budget? I recently bought a Casio Pathfinder that has about 1,000 features including a pretty accurate compass. It was about $200, which I thought was OK. but if you don't need all the extras it's probably overkill.

Seems to me the real value in enormous watches is the altimeter, barometer and maybe thermometer.
I can't see myself spending 100+ for a compass.

Casio Pathfinder at Costco – $99 (not online, but in retail stores).

I have Suunto Core and like it fine. Not the cheapest, though, and I wouldn't get it (or any other watch) for the compass. Couldn't live without the altimeter, but as someone else suggested, a watch-band compass would be better than the electronic thing.

I send core's and vectors back for warranty all the time. I personally like high gear. they have watch/compass models(no altimeter/barometer) for 40-90 bucks.

High gear seems very good for the price. I like my Altitech carabiner style watch and my brother likes the watch I bought him. As said above though, compass function on these things is pretty miserable for use for any real navigation.
