Silk weights in "mm" are not "mils" they are "Mommes" – a number that equals the weight in pounds of a piece of silk if it were sized 45 inches by 100 yards [from Wiki].
Buy some RIT dye and follow the instructions on the bottle, it works very well on silk. Keep in mind that 5mm is very see through, so don't expect any dark or vibrant coloration.
