Nice essay and photos-especially good to see the references to being lost in the mountains in Asia-that last taste says it all. I can't help but wonder what your tripod was on this trip? That Shadow shot looked like something substantial? The photographer you ran into?

John, the tripod is a Slik Sprint Pro II. Though I hate what it does to my pack weight, I love having it along. Here’s more about the photo gear I bring on my trips.
