Hey I got a regular sized ridgerest sleeping pad today and I want to cut it down. I was wondering how short do most people cut their pads down to? I was going to use my pack for my legs because I want to save weight but I also want it to fit inside a UL pack when the day comes that I buy one. This is all for my future PCT thru-hike.

Any suggestions?

I cut an old ridgerest to length w/ scissors (used a straight edge to keep the cut straight)

48 inches sounds good, and now my dog gets the extra little piece. Thanks for clarifying things. :)

The best way to determine how short to cut is to lay on the ground, on the pad, and experiment with different lengths of the pad sticking out above your head. This way you can simulate various lengths until you find as short as possible without surpassing the level of discomfort you are willing to accept. Then, cross reference that this particular length meets your other needs (like folds into a dimension that works for the pack you are considering) and if all things seem compatible enough, then cut.

I am imagining this will be approximately the length between the top of your shoulders and the bottom of your buttocks (afterall, do you need it under your head if you are using a ball of clothes for a pillow?)

Hope this helps

Cheers

The new Ridgerest has a reflective coating or film applied to one side. You may want to tape the exposed edge.

Before cutting down a 72 or 77 inch RR, try their 48 inch model on for size.

I ended up cutting it to 48 inches and now have a 24 inch piece for my dog. I did the measurement from my shoulder and down to my butt and the 48 inch piece goes down to almost my knees. I think I will keep this length for now until I get a new pack and then when I have something to size it to I will get a few more inches off. Thanks for the extra insight everyone :)
