I have a button compass that looks like this –

Compass
The bezel is about 20mm in diameter. It's oil filled/damped. There is a clip/slot on the bottom that accepts a 3/4" pack strap. Mine lives on the end of my shoulder strap, always available. Its lasted through about 3 years of abuse. But it's getting a little "sticky".

Anyone have a favorite they can recommend?

It must be durable and solidly attach to a strap.

[Yes, I know – get a real one…. Spare me ;-)]

I have the same kind, so I can't help.

I also have one of the REI zipper-pull compasses. The plastic base is too heavy, so I trimmed that off with a dremel tool.

None of these are exactly precision instruments, but for the kind of terrain what we are in mostly, you really don't need a perfect compass very often.

Google these.

Suunto Micro Clipper

Silva Model 340 Clip-On Wrist Band Compass (just like the one above)

Silva Luminous 40 Watch Strap Compass

Brunton Slider Watchband Compass 9068

The Silva Companion is a little bigger and worth a look.

Or get a K&M match case with a nice button compass built in.

I made a bracelet of paracord in a "cobra" braid, a whistle sternum strap buckle and one of the Brunton watchband compasses.

Dale,
Thanks for those suggestions. I looked at each one.
Some a little pricey compared to the $5 button I'm using, and don't offer much more. The Silva 40 (in your post above) looks like the best of the lot.
I appreciate your time.

I'll keep looking.

Bud,
I looked at those.

NATOCompass
A little to small. And $35

But I like the "Compact Survivor" for its size and cardinals.

CompactTrackerCompass
20mm diameter. And they are only $3

Is there any way to attach them to a strap?

Greg, I have a ton of button compasses (like hundreds in a bag) that are just round (20mm?) with no attachment points, but I'm guessing some epoxy could fix that. I'd be happy to stick a few in an envelope for you at no charge if you're interested.

Oh yeah, I disabled pm's when I was selling a bunch of stuff on gear swap… pm's are terrible for gear swap.

It's activated again now.
