Ti Goat is now making carbon lids for pots. Expensive, stupid light. My question is, how will they react to heat and more particularly, fire? Can carbon survive embers falling on it?

CF is held with resin, which will melt. But if this takes off I can see it being "The Next Big Thing" (since Titanium) for backpackers who must have the most expensive gear.
Are there any health hazards involved in cooking with a material held together with resins? I would be a little leery of using CF as a lid.
This is my primary concern as well, although a light silicone film over it could alleviate concern.
I am not a physicist but I do work at a archery shop and most arrows are carbon does heat hurt carbon no I could hold a torch on carbon for hours and it won't Hurt the carbon but it will break down the resin and cause catastrophic failure so if they use a resin that is heat resistant then it will be fine the temperature the lid sees can't be to hot a carbon pot wouldnt work as the resin would break down so will a carbon lid work ya as for it being safe as long as the resin doesn't break down you are fine but the resin is what would cause a problem

Regarding the BPA lid….
Since it won't (or at least very minimally) be touching the water, I doubt it'd be of any harm. Now, if flames lick up the side, or embers burn it, I don't know how the fumes are…
Not do disenfranchise TiGoat, but I made a MYOG lid for my Snow Peak 450 mug out of a thin silicone sheet. It weighs 7 grams and doubles as a "pot holder." After the water boils, I use the heat resistant silicone lid to grab the hot handles of the mug. Since the silicone is thin, it does get rather hot; but once removed from the mug, it cools down within seconds, thus letting me use it to grip the hot handles.
[Well, this thread gets my vote for best welcome lighthearted drift in a while. Fun stuff. (It had been a wee bit stuffy around here of late.) Do pardon the big Ephesian photo in the middle.]
As for the topic, what I would really like to see is more "sippy" style lids, such as offered by Evernew for their 400 mug (see pic below), but that are heat resistant, such as silicone, CF, etc. At first, I thought that is what Ti Goat was doing here (hence my initial concern about toxicity – though it is an issue with or without obviously), but they say on their website that it only has a steam vent.

The standard lid with those thin Ti pots pops out after some use, because the pot deforms.
So Josh at Ti Goat made the CF one with enough deph to stay in place.
In fact you can turn the (empty…) pot upside down and it still remains attached.

If you look carefully you can see where the flames from my TiTri Caldera Cone reach up the pot, and that is about 1.5cm from where the lid rim stcks out.
So in normal use (for me) it does not get hot enogh to make any difference.
Now on the other hand if you hold it over a fire you get some nasty smells from it.

A couple things here…
BPA – Is a building block of epoxy resin. There are many opinions about this and is it safe, etc. Let's just say taking BPA out of your Lexan bottles and moving to the Eastman copolymer that is BPA free may ease your minds. Please just realize that it is also an ingredient that goes into many, many cans as a lining. Peas, soup, diet soda, tomato sauce, etc. Research it, make up your own mind and make your own decision.
Carbon Fiber is indeed held together with resin. Either in a hand layup / infusion style or a pre-preg style of matrix. If someone wants to use that for a food related item, they will have to get an FDA approval that takes it all up to what is called the USP-Class VI rating. Basically that means if it passes, it can be used in direct contact with human fluids (no comments please!). Resin hearing aids have to pass this as well as biomedical things…
Heat performance of such CF parts – That is dictated by the resin matrix. The Tg of such resins will decide if the resin will soften / break down OR not. If it is above the 212F then the resin will not fail at or below the temp. It does NOT take into account flame and fire damage.
Flame and Fire – Typically that specification is a UL rating like UL-94V0 which is the one most people strive for. Aerospace specifications for most CF parts are more stringent and take into account flame, smoke and toxicity data such as the inside of an airplane cabin.
Sorry for the lengthy response but this is what I do all day.
Short of having a UL rated or FDA approved part, it could possibly be allowed for "near food use" rather than "direct food use" or "direct human fluid contact".
Short answer is that it will likely get damaged by flame at some point if you are careless but if you boil water on a gas stove, the flames will likely NOT lick up that far to affect the lid. You could solve the issue by using a small gasket under the lid to isolate it from the pot / cup.

I recently added RC gas tubing to the handles of my Trek 700 and a Jetboil lid to make it easier to drink from. The first time a flame hit the handle from my Cobalt Soloist the tubing started to melt (it was rated to 200 deg.). And the lid itself started to lose its gripping power around the rim as the mug heated up. I love my titanium products but I keep going back to my GSI kettle and insulated mug.
The problem with these sippy lids is the material looses its stiffness as it warms up, resulting in leaks.
