What are the current recommendations for a 3 season, “light”, 3P (2 adults & 1 child) tent?

I am thinking something under 5 lbs & under $800.

I have looked at a few online but none have really jumped out to me.  The Triplex is close, but I think it may not be large enough.

  • ZPacks – Triplex
  • Tarptent – Rainshadow 2/Hogback
  • MyTrailCo – Tent UL 3
  • Nemo – Losi/Dagger 3P
  • MSR – Mutha Hubba
  • TNF – Triarch 3
  • BA Copper Spur UL3

I have a Fly Creek UL4 listed on ebay.

This might be a good option because it is generally accepted nowadays that 3-person tents usually can only fit 2 people comfortably, and this is probably true almost across the board. (SMD Lunar Duo being one exception… that this an honest-to-goodness 2-person… and there may be others.) Back in my ‘Trad Dark Ages’ I had a Marmot Limelight 3 and there’s zero doubt that 3 would’ve been a tight fit.

I realized the FC doesn’t have the side doors and 2 vestibules, but being a 4-person the one door and vestibule are pretty big, and it is lighter than the CS with more room inside.

Did you check out the TarpTent Cloudburst 3?  I am partial to tunnel tents if I’m using a real “tent” instead of a shelter.  Otherwise, try out some of the many pyramid or mid shelters.  I would for the Cloudburst 3 over the rainshadow or hogback almost any day. The hogback is much more of a pain to set up in tight spaces and is generally more cumbersome and finicky, though it does give much more space.
