Protecting DSLR’s

The Zing cases are made of water-resistant materials for sure, but the way they are made won't keep anything dry from other than a well-place drip. Rain leaking in your pack will get into your camera in a Zing. Water that gets in will puddle and remain too. I do own and use them, but would never rely on one for moisture protection for a valuable and moisture sensitive item. At the very least I would add a good quality roll-top dry bag, or something like my Lock-and-Lock suggestion.

Thanks to both of you. Looks like the Medium Zing Pouch is 4oz and the Lowepro Lens Case 1 is 5oz, so I'll probably just go with the Lowepro. Weights are according to manufacturer websites, but amazon lists them at 8oz and 15.7oz, respectively. Can anyone confirm the weights of either of these? Any other options I'm overlooking?

This summer, I was out along a river taking video with my T1i of friends jumping off rocks into the water. As we were climbing back up the embankment to the trail, I dropped my camera in a Zing case and it rolled off a 15 foot cliff flat onto river rock. Besides having to manually push the mirror back down as it got stuck up from the impact, the camera is fine.

I'd highly recommend one of those cases. Also, wear a strap.

I have always liked the idea of a LowePro TLZ either with a modded version of the stock sling or just threading it through a weight bearing hip belt to make sure it stays in place. Anybody have experience with just using it on the hip belt rather than on a chest sling?

Also, I know this won't make it waterproof by any stretch but any thoughts on using DWR treatment on a TLZ to try and beef up the weather resistance? I would have the case in a dry bag in my pack if it is a good steady rain but in something like a sprinkle I would like the extra security of knowing it is DWR coated.

Old post but thought I would contribute for archival info! I use a Nikon D5100 with a 300mm lens and wanted something padded and WATERPROOF for my camera.
