Nomad fits quite short and I can't even do my hood up on mine its way to small around the neck. that fabric is also really thick and warm. the travel 200 hoody is decent as well but sleeves are quite loose and the hood isn't that functional. My 2cents

Minus33 has a nice looking thick wool hoodie. I have no idea what it weighs though. It's tough to find too. Like their webpage shows it in their big rotating image, but it's not actually listed on their site.

I've never tried on an Icebreaker product but noticed they had hoodies when I stopped into one of their stores last week.

I have a Ibex Woolies Zip T-Neck (150g/m2) and feel that it is snug albeit a little short for my torso. I'm 180lbs and 6' for reference.

My Men's Small Ibex Indie hoody weighs 255g (9oz) and is amazing. It's a great fitted baselayer for my 5'10", 150lb frame and I purchased it this late summer for ~$70. It is thicker, but IMO more durable/versatile than the BPL hoody. Cheaper and readily available as well!

Really. Have have had Patagonia and just about everything else and this fits the best and works great.

Another vote for the Ibex Hooded Indie. I picked mine up for $59 in the outlet not long ago and I absolutely love it. Fit on me is long and snug and the hood is comfy.

The Icebreaker Nomad is a nice piece, but I don't like it for hiking due to the weight, it's extremely warm. Right now, I consider it my most durable casual sweater, since I've had it a few years and it's had no pilling.

Icebreaker also makes the Quantum Hood at 260 g/m2. I have their first version of it, it was lighter then (220 g/m2), and it had a lined hood. I cut the lining out of the hood because it was too hot. Now I like it for hiking.

Nau makes a the M3 Hoody, which is 300 g/m2. The fabric doesn't stretch enough and the cut makes it feel more like a jacket than a base layer or insulation layer. I consider it for casual use or day hikes only.

Another option is from Rambler's Way, they make a button wool hoody, but they don't list the weight.

If I hadn't already gotten so many wool hoodies, I'd pick up an Ibex Indie. I still may get one.

I was looking for something along the lines of the Ibex Indie Hoodie in a men's small. How do you get the REI 20% coupon?

Michael,

I’ve been pondering my own 20% off coupon…. hmmm.

REI Ibex Indie ($73.60 after coupon)

REI Members save 20% on a full price item. Lifetime membership only costs $20 so if you aren’t a member I’d look at something over $100 to come out even, but a great deal IMO.

That is a very thick and warm hoody and probably only should be used as an insulation layer. I have a really thick wool IceBreaker layer at 320 and that is a bit much sometimes.

I recently bought one of the MEC hoodies and the torso fit is very, very long. I never have issues with this, but this hoodie, after washing/drying, still comes down to my groin. For reference, I'm 6' 190lbs.

Other than the weird length, I'm loving it… wore it with a GoLite Ether windshirt for 5 days in the rain on the West Coast Trail, and it was dynamite. Never got dry, but was never cold either.

Just curious Jim, what didn't you like about the hood on the Beartooth? It seems most users love the close fitting and balaclava design.

PostedOct 11, 2010 at 12:46 pm

A close fitting balaclava design would be great, but doesn't describe my beartooth.

It seems to be cut too wide where the hood joins the body. When I zip it up to the chin it is not fitted under the chin around the neck at all. (unlike the icebreaker nomad which is). I would need for my neck to be the same diameter as the bottom of my head for this to happen, and fortunately I'm not built like that!

Had I lived in the US I'd have returned it as it very swiftly showed holes/snags also, but decided to live with it, but I am disappointed.

Anyone know of a Company that makes a wool hoodie in a tall size?, i need a tall medium for almost everything. larges are usually way to big in the chest, and arms still to short. 6'3 and skinny :P

mec doesnt do tall for there wool hoodies :(, i have there Polartec long sleeve shirts that fit awesome.

eddie bauer makes talls but no hoodies in wool.

Thanks!

I sent an email to Minus33 regarding their hoody and got the following response:

"The hoody is currently discontinued due to a redesigning and may or may not be back next fall."

175$ for that tad hoodie?

i think i need to start a puppy farm and sell puppies to get that kind of money … lol

Adding a Merino buff to an existing shirt would give an instant hoody. Not perfect obviously, but OK.
