MLD DuoMid vs. Scarp 1 for snow? Need feedback, please.

Neither do I. I was just trying to answer space/use comparison questions.

The Scarp 1/2 and Hogback have full clip in/clip out interiors. They set up fly first–the inner is not part of the structural integrity or tensioning system–and the inner can be left attached or removed for fly only setup in staked or free-standing configuration. The inner can also be set up free-standing with the crossing pole setup. Whether to use the interior or not is a weather/bugs decision.

Keep in mind that the original Chouinard Pyramid was designed as a snow tent for Colorado Outward Bound. They've seen thousands of nights set up over an 8' x 8' pit dug in the snow with 4 campers in them. That's why the original pole adjusts so far, to clear the pit.

I'd love to see what a snowload would look like on a scarp 1, because it does have a lower angled roof than the solomid. It would have to be using the cross over poles, and you still have to rely on the "exo" frame for the support, a less desirable setup than internal poles for support. With the external poles in place, more fabric is supported overall.

doesnt the mld duo with solo inner weight 25 ounces total … assuming u use trek poles

scarp 1 is 44 ounces … 56 ounces with cross poles

im looking for a similar setup as well for all seasons… id love to know what twice the weight gets me above the mid

More usable space, better condensation management, much better snow loading, better wind peformance, modular approach, floor, no need for trekking poles.

I have used my MLD Duomid in strong winds (40mph+) above treeline in the Wind Rivers in Wyoming. Camped at the same exposed site just below Bonnie Pass for four nights. I had NO issues with the Duomid in those winds. I had it staked directly to the ground with MSR Needle Stakes. Everything worked above and beyond my expectations. As for snow loading, I'm not sure, but I hope to get some good use out of it this winter so we'll see. I imagine the steep, slippery walls will shed snow fairly well. A cuben Duomid would likely do better since it doesn't stretch when wet, but you would want to be more careful clearing snow off a cuben shelter.

I want to thank everyone on their feedback. It is important to note that I want a tent ONLY for winter snow conditions. I have a cuben tarp that works perfectly for me in 3 season conditions and even in mild snow of a few inches.

So based on this specific need, the Scarp 1 is my choice. Also, I decided on a solid inner with the crossing poles.

So, 3 days ago I ordered the Scarp 1 online from TarpTents in the late afternoon (around 3:30PM). Henry's Website said it was not in stock yet. That was fine. I chose the cheapest shipping option.

Today "Brown" dropped it off at my door!!
