I love music, listening or making it, and I love the sounds of nature, or simple silence. It's allllll goooood. I definitely appreciate the mp3 devices, but they have their time and place.

Was watching a sunset 3 or 4 days into a solo journey this summer, with some heavy stuff going on in my brain from back in the real world. Was at Monarch lakes in Sequoia after coming over a couple passes from the 5 lakes area. The day ended with a beautiful view down a canyon and this song was just speaking to me with the view I had. It was talking about the clouds and the golden sunset and the river while speaking directly of these things I was dealing with. Then it unleashed this 30 minute jam that peaked and brought me to this all encompassing pure bliss moment of clarity. A simultanious physical mental and spiritual bliss that built up brought on by the combo of the tunes and the sunset. The chorus is just "we want you to be happy" over and over again, and it seemed like everything would be alright. Then I turn around…I might have even been laughing, I saw the first person I had seen in 3 days. I was really suprised, and ripped back to reality from that fleeting feeling. I think I fumbled a few words, but wasn't very polite, and too bad, it was a beautiful woman, also solo :P

There is just a time and a place. Usually it is at night.

"Portugal, the Man" is a band I love to listen to while relaxing in the wilderness. They're from Alaska….go figure. Give the album "Censored Colors" a try, I bet you like it.

For me it can go from ZZ Top, to The Allman Brothers, Van Halen…Radio music from Reno if I just bring a small tranistor. If it is my iPod then it is punk or reggae.

If I bring nothing, then it usually is The Ramones that play music in my head. I usually have music going through my head the whole time I am hiking. Anything from Elton John to The Dead Kennedys…I am not sick…trust me!

I, too, prefer to listen to the sounds of nature while in the woods. But while back in “civilization” several songs remind me of being in the woods:

it’s time to tell the truth how the east and west were won”

Most of these are instrumental bands, which I find to be amazing hiking music. I highly recommend all these groups. Hope you take check them out and enjoy!

I think we need another thread for what you would listen when you need some special motivation to grind out more miles or attack some long switchbacks.

Good to see Aphex Twin and Air references amongst the calls for bluegrass and only babbling brooks. For around camp, lots of good weird glitchy electronic music is always good.

And I agree that another thread on music to motivate one on the long uphill slogs at the end of the day is in order. Pogues! Glitch Mob! Rancid! Stanton Warriors!
