They look nice, but that price is getting into the Nunatak Skaha range, and they are made in China while Nunatak is made in the USA.
I like how the "Made in China" is a bullet point… Like you know they're proud it wasn't made in… umm… wait what's worse than China? Umm…
But they are probably eating organic in the factory cafeteria.
For a $150
Take a look at the Eddie Bauer First Ascent down sweater. I have one and like it plus it got good reviews here on BPL.
some EB first ascent are known for leaking feathers.
I wanted the last year's model in the 900 fill.
While I'd save up for a Skaha as well, they are still some $90 more than the Special Edition Sweater. I had heard rumors a while back that the SES was going to use cuben as the shell material…
JAck,
they all leak feathers sooner or later. I've seen exactly 4 leak from mine in heavy use over one week. Notta too bad.
Initially that happens. My Eddie Bauer jacket I bought in 1972 leaked a bit at first too. I lasted 15 years and two owners.
EB down jacket has a lifetime warranty on it; just in case your jacket start losing more feathers. :)
Looks good. I like the translucent fabric and the spec's are good.
First Ascent Downlights on clearance at Eddie Bauer. Just scored a tall for $89
I'd still buy a Montbell.
Oh it's soooo nice. Too bad I just recently bought the new R1 hoody and the hooded nanopuff or I would buy the new pata down sweater. The store here in Denver got it 3 weeks ago. A week after I bought my hooded nanopuff.
$275 is nearing absurdity for what you get in the Patagonia Down Sweater Special Edition IMO. Pass. I too, would opt for a Montbell UL Down Parka, which I already have, and paid 1/2 the amount of the Pata DS Special Edt. Weighs less, has a hood and doesn't resemble something you'd wear at some swanky ultra-premium vodka induced nightclub in downtown Moscow.
It's pretty clear you're paying for the "Special" in Special Edition.
I'd agree- not so special at $275
it's roughly 2.5 oz lighter than their "not special" down sweater- I own one of those and it's a quality garment w/ good loft and a few "extra" features like drawstring hem, zipper pockets, etc- mine is going to be relegated to winter duty as I just picked up a ex light (w/ a nice discount :)) that will now be my go to three season insulating layer
I could buy two ex lights for the same $ and still come in at the same weight :)
Chris
For that money I would get the PHD Ultra Down Pullover. I have one and can attest to the quality and warmth for the weight. (will buy another one when I destroy mine)
It is not a "special edition", but it is also not made in China.
It takes a while to get it made and shipped, but it is worth the wait in my humble opinion.
